Professionals working in the field of education are usually passionate about educating their students. Some teachers find it difficult to manage a high school class in their early experiences. But here are a few steps that can be helpful in classroom management in high school.
Use Normal Tone of Voice
Most teachers use to raise their volume in the initial months of their teaching experience. And they do so to get the attention of students and make them better understand. But you must have noticed that after a few months, you lose your voice and you don’t feel like speaking even at a normal tone. That’s why as a teacher you should use a normal tone of voice for delivering lectures and managing classrooms.
Start When Students are Quiet
As a teacher, never start your lecture when students are making noise or talking to each other. You can ask them to listen to you first and when you feel enough silence in your class, then start delivering lectures. You can also wait for them to stop or you can give them cues like ‘shh’ or can say little sentences like ‘stop talking’ and ‘be quiet’.
Nonverbal Communication Matters
Not only verbal communication is enough for teaching, but you also need to use nonverbal communication. It will include gestures and eyes and hand movements. It will help you in better management of the class and get their attention. If you continue practicing the same way, your students will also learn these things and get used to it. This technique works wonderfully because your nonverbal communication is sometimes enough to keep them in control.
Deal with Behavioral Issues Wisely
If students create a problem or demonstrate a behavioral issue with you or with other students, try to deal it quickly and wisely. Because if you postponed this issue, students will not get the consequences of their behavior which will increase their behavior. Moreover, your negative feelings can also increase toward the student over time. You can also save your time by telling the students about do’s and don’ts in advance.
Well-designed and Engaging Lectures
Well-designed and engaging lectures are effective in getting the student’s attention and make them able to concentrate. You must have plans to engage them otherwise they will have one for you. And you may have observed this thing in your class that bored students cause more trouble. Make your lessons interactive, ask students questions during the lesson, so they listen attentively. You must also have a plan to execute if you are left with time after the lesson.
