Danny Archer: "Sometimes I wonder, will God ever forgive us for what we've done to each other? Then I look around and I realize... God left this place a long time ago."

Blood Diamond is a Political Action Thriller movie and it was released in 2006. It was directed by Edward Zwick and it starred Leonardo Dicaprio, Djimon Honsou and Jennifer Connelly. It tells the story of Africa's conflict diamonds and it focuses on how the Blood Diamonds of Sierra Leone kept the civil war going, and how it affected the lives of all the people there as well as the lives of all the main characters who were caught up in the story of these diamond's journey from the conflict areas to glitzy, shiny showrooms. It takes inspiration from real events and adds characters to the mix and it tells a convincing, inspirational and serious tale of a bunch of people who get their destinies rewritten in Sierra Leone. And all that, due to the presence of these diamonds among them and the civil war that was happening around them.

The ending of the movie refers to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) which was an agreement signed in Kimberley, South Africa by many countries which seeks to stop the trade of these blood diamonds and hence reduce their presence in the international diamond market thereby effectively cutting the money supply of anybody that was using these diamonds for violent activities. Blood Diamond is one of those 'socially conscious' movies where the focus is given on how the people caught in a civil war survive, how civil wars continue despite global knowledge of them, and also on the secret agreements between companies and rebels during times of war and how it affects each and every one of us in the world and how we are all a part of the global diamond trade. Blood Diamond is a movie that has an idea of what it wants to say.

Story

The rebels of Sierra Leone are fighting against the government and all the people are trapped between the rebels and the government and they are trying to not get killed by either of their armies. Solomon Vandy (Djimon Honsou) is a common man who gets taken away by the rebels to work in the diamond mines for them. Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a man wants to make some money by finding some big diamonds so that he can become rich and then get off the African continent. Maddy Bowen (Jennifer Connelly) is a woman journalist who is covering the secret trade of blood diamonds in Sierra Leone. Then Solomon finds a big diamond while working and he knows that it will get him a lot of money and maybe it will help him find his family as well. But when he goes to hide the diamond, he is found out by Captain Poison and just as he is about to be killed, the army attacks the rebels and Solomon uses this distraction to hide the diamond and then he is taken away by the police.

Danny hears about the diamond and helps Solomon to get out of the prison and then they end up becoming partners to both make some money of the diamond and to find Solomon's family. Danny tries to get help from Maddy so that he can get information about Solomon's family which he hopes can help him to get the diamond all for himself. Eventually to convince her, he tells her all of the secrets of the diamond trade. Then they locate his family and then they realize that his son too had been taken away by the rebels and he is now a child soldier. So they go in search of his son and then they locate him at a rebel camp. There they are caught by the rebels and just before they are killed by Captain Poison, the army finds them and shoots down the rebels. Once they are all safe and secure, Danny's old commanding officer Colonel Coetzee (Arnold Vosloo) who is the leader of the army asks Danny to find out where the diamond is, from Solomon. But both Danny and Solomon know that once the Colonel gets the diamond, they will both be killed.

So just after finding the diamond, they shoot the army officers before they were about to shoot both of them. Then as they try to leave, Danny discovers that he has been shot. So he tells Solomon to go and take the diamond and his son with him to London. Then on the edge of a mountain, he makes one final call to Maddy Bowen and tells her that Solomon is coming to London and that he is bringing the diamond. He also tells her that she can write all about the diamond trade now because he is about to die. Maddy Bowen painfully says that she will help Solomon. And then, Danny dies in Africa itself. Later Solomon comes to London and meets a diamond company executive (Michael Sheen) and then Maddy Bowen takes pictures of him talking with the executive and then after Solomon gets all of his family back together safely in London, she writes about this illegal trade of diamonds and exposes the diamond company and hence, all the diamond companies lose their reputation. She ends the article with a picture she had taken earlier of Danny. The movie ends with Solomon Vandy walking up to the Kimberley Process discussions where he will be giving a speech about these Conflict Diamonds. Then when the crowd applauds him as he is just about to start his speech, Solomon smiles back at the crowd. After that, the end titles state that the Kimberley Process is now used to make sure that Blood Diamonds are no longer used and that their trade has now been stopped or at least definitely reduced.

Movie Quotes

Danny Archer -

  • Sometimes I wonder, will God ever forgive us for what we've done to each other? Then I look around and I realize... God left this place a long time ago.
  • Who do you think buys the stones I bring out? Dreamy American girls who want a story book wedding and a big shiny rock just like the ones they see in the advertisements in your politically correct magazines. So, please, don't come here and make judgements on me, alright. I provide a service. The world wants what we have, and they want it cheap. We're in business together, you and me. Get over yourself, darling.
  • When's the last time the world wasn't falling apart?
  • That's alright. I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.

Col. Coatzee -

  • This red earth, it's in our skin. The Shona say the colour comes from all the blood that's being spilled fighting over the land. This is home. You'll never leave Africa.

Dialogue

1) Archer: T.I.A., right M'ed? M'ed: T.I.A. Maddy: What's T.I.A.? Archer: This Is Africa, huh?

2) Maddy: You're using him. Danny Archer: I am using him and you are using me and this is how it works, isn't it?

3) Solomon: You are how old? Archer: Me? I'm 31. Solomon: And you have no wife? Archer: No. Solomon: No children? Archer: No. Solomon: And no home? Archer: No. Solomon: But you have money, yes? Archer: Ja, some. Solomon: But not enough? Archer: No Solomon: If you get this diamond, you will have enough money, yes? Archer: Yes. Solomon: Then you will get the wife and children. Archer: Probably not, no. [Solomon chuckles] Archer: What? Solomon: I'm confused. Archer: Yeah? Makes two of us my bru.

But this is the best one.
