This is the only movie to be directed by Bruce Lee.

Way of the Dragon is a martial arts film starring, produced, written and directed by Bruce Lee. It was released in 1972. It is also known as 'The Way of the Dragon' and 'Return of the Dragon' in some places. Bruce Lee also plays the main lead in the movie and it was the first time that he was the director of a movie. This was Lee's third movie overall and it was his first and only finished film that he directed. Though he was also the director of 'Game of Death', he died before he could finish that movie, making this the only film to be directed by Bruce Lee.

Since in some places it was released after 'Enter the Dragon', it was renamed as 'Return of the Dragon' for some of the later released territories. So to a lot of people, this movie is remembered as 'Return of the Dragon'. Even now sometimes people use these titles interchangeably. It also stars Robert Wall, Chuck Norris, Nora Miao, Hwang In-Shik etc. It became an internationally famous film. It was also named as one of the best world cinemas of all time and it came in at number 95 at the Empire magazine's list '100 Best Films of World Cinema' in 2010.

Bruce Lee founded Concord Productions along with Golden Harvest founder Raymond Chow to make this movie and at the time of its release, it set a new box office record in Hong Kong.

The film is remembered for its final fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris in the Colosseum and their fight is now regarded as one of the most memorable fights of all time. Every Bruce Lee fan, kung fu fan and all action fans around the world need to see this movie as soon as they can. Because...it's Way of the Dragon!

Trailer

Story

Tang Chun played by Bruce Lee comes from Hong Kong to help out his uncle and niece in Rome who get disturbed all the time by the mafia. He beats up all those who come to interrupt their business and so he is warmly welcomed by all of his uncle's restaurant workers and his uncle and niece. So he starts to enjoy the life in the city of Rome.

The mafia boss tries to send thugs, then snipers, and later killers to stop Tang Chun but one by one, they all fail to kill him. His niece is kidnapped and asked to sign over the restaurant but they rescue her before she is forced to do so. Finally, the boss hires three fighters to kill him. But while he is fighting and defeating two of them, his uncle kills two of his friends, as he really wanted to sell the property so that he could make a large amount of money from the deal. So now the story gets one more twist as we lead into the climax.

Near to the end, Tang meets Colt played by Chuck Norris, the best fighter of the three that had been hired to kill him and the only one Tang hasn't faced so far. Then they have a fight between them inside the Colosseum and though it is a great fight, Tang realizes that he has to outsmart his opponent. Finally, using quick feet and thinking, Tang defeats Colt and then the police come and arrest his uncle. Finally at the end, he says goodbye to his niece and just as he came to Rome, he leaves Rome alone.

This is just the story. What you need to see are the fight scenes by Bruce Lee. That's what makes this movie worth checking out.

Conclusion

Considering the fact that this was his first movie that he directed, it is kinda surprising how good the movie is for its time. It deftly alternates between scenes of sound and silence, loudness and quietness, comedy and action, light-heartedness and rough fights and the sequences just keep on coming one after the other as if Bruce Lee is really enjoying the experience of getting full control over making his own movie to show his vision of what his movies should really be like. And yes, it is a movie to remember.

Action pictures don't normally get much praise from critics so if the movie became number 95 on Empire magazine's list of 100 Best World Cinema well then i think it proves how well Bruce had made the movie. And of course, the final fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris is a classic one and it is still considered as one of the best choreographed movie fights of all time. Bruce smartly lets the moves do the talking, and uses less cutting and keeps the shot going so that you can see all the punches and how the fighters move and so on . So he brings a level of realism to the movie and the final fight happens at the Colosseum which also adds to the grand epic nature of that fight. All of which, makes that fight and hence the movie as well, an easy to enjoy classic. So due to all of these reasons, it is easy to understand that definitely, Way of the Dragon is one of those Awesome Movies.
