Blade: There are worse things out tonight than vampires.
Dr. Karen Jenson: Like what?
Blade: Like me.

Blade is a vampire, comic-book, action movie and it was released in 1998. It stars Wesley Snipes in the role of Blade who is also called as the 'Daywalker'. He is someone who has all the powers of vampires but none of their weaknesses, except for their thirst for blood. This is the most famous role of Wesley Snipes and it is also the role for which he is most remembered for. It also stars Kris Kristofferson, Stephen Dorff, N'Bushe Wright & Donal Logue. It was directed by Stephen Norrington and written by David S. Goyer.

It tells the story of Blade who is trying to protect humans from being attacked by vampires and turned into them. But Blade is himself a half-Vampire and so he has to protect them while making sure that he doesn't become like the vampires, who are also trying to kill him. The story deftly balances action and vampire movie conventions and its dark atmosphere was interesting to the public when it was released. The movie starts with an unforgettable trance club sequence where the sprinklers spill blood while the music is still blasting through the speakers and at the same time, in walks Blade!

This was Wesley Snipes most famous role and it's a funny fact that despite of all his many roles in many, many action movies, this is the best one he ever had. It was a box office success and it heralded the beginning of the revival of the Superhero and Comic-book genre in movies. So the next time you hear about new movies and T.V. shows based on comic-book characters such as the X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, Justice League, Wolverine, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, The Avengers, etc., you know who to thank. Among movies made on characters from comic-books, and especially in Marvel comics' history, Blade remains an unsung hero.

Trailer

It's a long song but it's got something.

Story

The movie begins with a scene in a club where the water that is thrown onto the crowd is revealed to be blood. When there is a man who is about to be killed by all the vampires around him, then appears Blade. He singlehandedly destroys the ones that were attacking the man and all the others run away. Then the scene moves into a hospital where Dr. Karen Jenson gets bitten by a vampire and Blade brings her back into his lair to see if he can cure her and thus we get to meet his weaponsmith Abraham Whistler. They try to find a cure for her. Meanwhile, Deacon Frost speaks of his radical ideas to stop hiding in the shadows and to attack and enslave all the humans. His vampire elders scoff at the idea and Frost tries to understand the lore about the La Magra, an ancient vampire god. This leads to him overthrowing the old elder circle of the vampires and becoming their new ruthless leader which will lead to an eventual confrontation with Blade.

Around this time, vampires invade Blade's lair and brutally attack Whistler leaving him to either bleed to death or to become a vampire. Blade gives him a gun to die with dignity and goes after Frost. When Blade is fighting the vampires of Frost, he reveals that it was him who attacked his mother when she was pregnant with Blade and hence turned him into a half-human, half-vampire hybrid. He also reveals that his mother is still alive as Frost's mistress. This stuns Blade and Frost's vampires are able to defeat him. Then they take him to the Temple of the Eternal Night to sacrifice and kill him. Blade's blood is used to begin the process of awakening La Magra and then Frost kills all of the elder circle and all their souls combine to make him the La Magra. Around this time, Dr. Jenson escapes her captors and makes Blade take her blood which makes him animalistic and completely unstoppable. Then when his mother tries to stop him, Blade kills her and then Blade and Frost have their final fight.

Blade wastes no time and kills all of Frost's vampires and then calls out Frost's name. Frost appears and then they fight with both parties seemingly equal. Then Blade uses the antidote that Dr. Jenson had been creating to cure vampirism and then keeps on hitting him with more and more doses of it. Finally Frost explodes and Blade is victorious. After it's all over, Dr. Jenson tells him that Blade can now use the antidote to cure himself as well. Blade tells her to keep improving her antidote because for now he realizes that he needs to keep his powers, his curse, if he is to keep hunting vampires. So they part and then the last scene is in Moscow, where a vampire is about to attack a lady and then out of the night he hears a voice... Blade!

Movie Quotes

Blade -

  • When you understand the nature of a thing, you know what it's capable of.
  • Some motherf***ers are always trying to ice-skate uphill.
  • Motherf***er, are you outta yo damn mind?! (when, after a charred vampire just escaped a hospital, the cops are shooting at him).
  • You better wake up. The world you live in is just a sugar-coated topping. There is another world beneath it - the real world. And if you want to survive it, you better (shouts) learn to pull the trigger!
  • FROST!!!

Dialogue

1) Blade: There are worse things out tonight than vampires. Dr. Karen Jenson: Like what? Blade: Like me.

2) Dr. Karen Jenson: You know, maybe you could think about letting it go? Try to be like everyone else. Blade: I have spent my entire life searching for that thing that killed my mother, and made me what I am. And every time I take one of those monsters out, I get a little piece of that life back. So don't you talk to me about forgetting.

3) Dr. Karen Jenson: You have a lot of love for him, don't you? Blade: We have a good arrangement. He makes the weapons. I use them.

4) Dr. Karen Jenson: I need to get back to the lab if I'm going to cure you. Blade: It's not over. You keep your cure. There's still a war going on and I've got a job to do. You want to help, make me a better serum.

5) (In Moscow) Russian Woman: It's cold. Where are we going? Russian Vampire: It's a surprise. Russian Woman: Surprise? I like surprises. Russian Vampire: Then you'll like this. (Attacks her) Blade: (In Russian) Zastal nevovremya, tovarisch? (Catch you at a bad time, comrade?)

A fight scene just to get you started.

Conclusion

It had been a long time since a superhero, comic-book movie had received somewhat positive, favourable reviews. The celebrated movie critic Roger Ebert gave it 3 stars out of 4. He appreciated the high visual style and said that the movie slams ahead in pure visceral imagery. It was a box office success and made 131 million dollars worldwide which also led to two more sequels - Blade II and Blade: Trinity. Blade II is seen as the best movie in the whole series. But that could not have been possible without the solid beginning given by this movie. Credit goes to director, the scriptwriter and more than all of them, to Wesley Snipes for breathing life into this character and making it his own. No matter who plays the role in the future, they will have a very difficult time trying to come up to this level. That's one of the main reasons for this movie's success.

The soundtrack was also a good collection of songs that were used in the movie and some of them are not heard in the movie itself but it does have the same atmosphere so all of them go along well with the look and feel of the movie. It had a mix of hip-hop and rock music which also charted on the Billboard charts. One of the standout songs on the soundtrack was Confusion (Pump Panel Reconstruction Mix) by New Order. This movie also led to more and more comic book properties getting a film treatment and thus superheroes and comic-book characters came back to your nearest cinema screen. All thanks to... Blade. So due to all of these reasons, it is easy to understand that, definitely, Blade is one of those Awesome Movies.
