   Does a celebrity's personal life affect your opinion of them?
   
   Some of the best examples are Michael Jackson and Johnny Depp, who were beloved for music and acting respectively. However, questions arose about possible abuse to others from both--does this affect your perspective of them?

   In passing I guess, but I really don't see all the hoopla except on big stars. Well . . . I do watch TMZ where they dig up stuff on current celebrities in music and acting. I usually don't know who they are talking about, so the opinion is in passing with no real impact. But, apparently those celebrities have followings and I think it does impact their followers.

      Thanks for your insight, Tim. I was gradually warming up to Depp, but then the drama with potential abuse of his partner came up. Now, seems like most fans don't quite know where to stand, as they're unsure whether they're rooting for a jerk or not.

   I like watching movies and listening to music, but I don't go googoogaagaa over them. It does disappoint me when they over express their political views. We have the entertainers on the left that make jokes or express their negative opinion about Trump and they are still on TV. But Tim Allen expresses his opinion about the left or liberal and they cancel his show. It just goes to show how powerful the left is in Hollywood.
   As for the celebrities, they are just people, people that have talent. Anyway, I believe that too many people make way to much out of their positions. For example, "what makes the Kardashians so popular?", other than the media?

      Agreed, America is prone to hero worship. Millions of people worshiped Justin Bieber, and a fair many remain even after his selfish attitudes arose. It's wise to remind ourselves that we really don't know celebrities and who they are or aren't.

   I don't care about any of it. They are entertainers with a real life. It's not my business. A lot the things that get said about them aren't even true. THey should be treated like evreyone else. If they do anything ileagle they should be treated like anyone else. The idol worship of these people is really getting out of hand. To the point that people belive whatever they hear whether it's true or not. I wish some of it just wouldn't get publisized. It would save a lot of wasted energy that would be better spent on other important issues.

      I'm with you, at least to an extent. I largely don't keep up with celebrities, as I'm not terribly interested, but if one commits a terrible act, it does make me less likely to enjoy their content.

   I absolutely think it affects my opinion of them. In regards to gossip or opinion I couldnt give flying grapes. When a celebrity commits an offence that I personally find distastful I usually veer away from their source of revenue - be it movies, music or tv (so on the fence with Johnny Depp as I am unsure whether the incident is speculation or criminally proven) but then Ive never been all that fussed about Depp. I usually follow sunsequent updates on their discretion especially if it was bad enough to make the actual news -  but you wouldnt catch me watching one of their movies or sitting down to reruns of Hey Dad. I am no fan of Woody Allen for instance, I disapprove of his lifestyle choices. I think he's a big ol perve.  Bill Cosby, is another example for me, glad he doesnt do film. So I guess it depends on what they have done rather than what they think for me. Michael Jackso was never charged. Did he do anything serious according to the gossip or not? He was weird, sure but Its not like people close to him threw him under the bus so Im going to go with no on that one.

      Agreed, and you mentioned several celebs I used in a Hub that explored this topic, like Jackson and Cosby, so I applaud your memory of such matters. The claims against Jackson were very serious, but we never discovered if they were true or not.

   Jeremy.....Really excellent question!   I'd have to say that for the most part, yes, their personal life affects my opinion of them, at least as much as this occurs with people I know who are NOT celebrities. 
   However, what's rather annoying is that the fact that celebrities are so high profile, their lives, nearly every move they make is an open book.  Granted, much of what their public image looks like is not who they are authentically....but then there is what they themselves reveal and we know it's accurate.
   Knowing myself, I try really hard not to be affected or base my opinion on personal lives, but it just is what it is.  I am who I am and in order to think vastly different, I'd have to drastically change who I am, what I believe and practically my general outlook on life.  Nah.....not gonna happen.
   Just a few examples?  I really liked Mel Gibson, until I literally heard his nasty, violent, demeaning and insulting RANT to the mother of his young daughter.  Suddenly, in my mind, he is a disrespectful, selfish, filthy-mouthed beast.  But guess what?  Celebrities really REALLY don't care what we think.....not at all.
   I was also a fan of The Rachel Ray Show.....until she & her husband publicly admitted to being "swingers" and having an Open Marriage.  Sure, they're entitled to do and be whatever they choose...none of my business.  But the question is, does it change my opinion of her?  Absolutely.  I haven't turned her show on since. Silly as it may sound.....I can't even look at her.  Yes, I freely admit to being a woman of morals & commitment....do we say, "Old Fashioned?"  Prudish?  Old school?  Backwards?  All of those names are just fine with me.  Make up more of them.  I do not care.  I guess I'm just not "hip', Cool or with it"   Oh well.

   I think that entertainers are just that, and everyone is entitled to a private life and this right should not be breached by the media and perpetuated by the public.  I believe that we should appreciate their art, whatever form it takes, but not become too absorbed in their personal affairs, as it's not relevant to our enjoyment.  On the other hand, if I were to see or hear valid reports of a person in the public eye committing abuse on others, I would likely retract my support, in the same way I would to anyone in my social circles otherwise in my own life.  But I would not judge the behaviour of celebrities in any manner that differs my judgement of my own friends.
