I think the primary reason is for marketing purposes. They need to have a catchy name that will sell and that people can remember easily. Just like any business.
Then it might become convenient when they want a little bit of privacy (bookings and such).
PS: I'm keeping myself from going straight to look for Madona's real name on Google..
First reason can be that, the name should be attractive and second most common reason can be someone popular is already there with that name.
May be they think that new name can change their destiny and bring more fame and money.
