What kind of warm up do you do when sitting down at the piano to practice?
scales scales scales! just do a 3-octave run through of all of your major scales, each one followed up by their arpeggio. Then once you have the majors locked in, work on all of your minors; natural, harmonic, and melodic. Scales are not only a great warm-up, knowing your scales will help in all aspects of your piano playing.
My daughters usually sit down at the piano and begin with technique(scales, cadences, etc.) but not always. Sometimes they just launch into a piece. If they are practicing for a recital or competition, they need to be able to just sit down and play without much of a warm-up.
