Why did early Hollywood stars change their names for the marquee?
First Hollywood stars (John Wayne, Jean Harlow, Cary Grant, etc.) were not allowed to use their real names. Why?
Studios wanted their names changed and simply assigned them new names-the stars didn't have much choice in what new names they got in the beginning. The names chosen fit the studio bosses' ideas of what names fit that person. In some cases, the original names would have been fine (eg. norma Jean instead of Marilyn) but no way would Marion be a good name for a cowboy or Archie Leach for a sex symbol.
