I think you can turn any gathering of friends and family into a party. All it takes is good conversation and happy people who enjoy being together.
The best parties have great food, interesting people, and awesome music. Also, if something totally ridiculous happens, all the better. A good party should be talked about for years to come.
Great food (potluck), friendly people, games, good conversation, candles, music created by the partiers. I love family gatherings at my sister's house, for example. My brothers bring their guitars and, sooner or later, we end up singing and harmonizing "oldies but goodies" in the living room or outside by a fire on the patio. I also love drumming sessions and kirtans (Hindu chanting).
