Still none the wiser, what country in America then, Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, etc. Anyway, foreign to American countries, I'd say Hammer horror films.

USA. New York State. Not New York City.

I like "The Orphanage" which is in Spanish, directed by Juan Bayona. And I like "Let the right one in" which is a Swedish horror film by Tomas Alfredson. Both are more "thinkers" than gore.

Nice! I will have to check it out. So maybe, if you like that one, you will like my other pick too.

By foreign I take it you mean not American. If so I'd say check out the Hammer classics from the UK. For Australia there is the movie Wake in Fright. If you want Italian then look for anything directed or produced by by Dario Argento.

Beauty and the Beast - 1978, Czech gothic retelling

    UK "Eden Lake" 2008
    Japan "Audition" 1999
    France "Inside" 2007
    Austria "Funny Games" 1997
    Belgium "Calvaire" 2004
All of these are fairly vicious... and definitely scary.
