Could someone explain why there is such a debate over Ben Affleck playing Batman?

Admittedly, I do not exactly follow superhero movies. So could someone please explain why  people seem to have such a problem with Ben Affleck playing Batman?

I like Ben Affleck but he seems a little bland or plain to play the part of a suave super hero. Thank goodness they didn't choose Tom Cruise, I've had enough of him for a life time.

Because Ben Affleck isn't a good actor - plain and simple.

That Batman movie franchise is what is holding DC up in the running of super hero movies.  Sure they have Superman, but Batman is where all the fans are.  If they are to compete with Marvel in the future, they do not really have any room to screw up.  Though Affleck has tons of fans of his own, he has never played a role such as Batman.  Also, this brings in to question what Batman he will play.  There is the regular ol' batman who is more of a professional crime fighter with morals and good intentions, like in the original batman movies; then there is the gritty dark knight who has the same good morals but goes about things in a darker manner.  Fans of the Batman movie franchise have come to love Christian Bale.  Affleck will be compared to him constantly.  Personally, I think they would be better off getting a no-name actor to play batman so they may reinvent the super hero, and give someone else a chance to become the next big thing in the acting world.  Besides, when you have an old familiar face playing a role of which fans love, such as Affleck playing Batman, you will always see the actor, not the character.  But who knows, maybe he will play an amazing Batman.

I have seen where they say that he is not menacing or "buff" enough to pull it off.

Batman is a symbol and a glorified hero who morphed from a difficult childhood and uses his hate and bitterness so others will never go through his past. The films make a ton of money and the goal of Batman movies is to shock and entertain with unique gadgets and amazing fight scenes. Yet every enterprise Affleck enters meets a horrid end. Him playing Daredevil was miserable to watch and the comic community hated it. Now him as Batman? Are they trying to ruin the enterprise they have created from the last three films? It's insulting!
