Will Smith: Better Actor or Artist?

    I personally think he's a better actor.

He's good at comedy in my opinion, but at drama I think Denzel is way ahead in terms of depth.

I think that true acting is an art, so I guess I am torn with this question. I do consider him one of the most talented actors of his generation. I think the older the actor, the more skills they possess and the more roles they can take on, but if that is not art, I dont know what is, and I am a painter.

I have enjoyed most of Will's film work... I wouldn't say he was a great actor right off the bat but he has developed into a pretty good one over the years.
A lot of people probably don't even remember that he was once a full time rap artist. It's been 25 years (!) since the novelty hit "Parents Just Don't Understand" launched his career.

Actually, "Girls Ain't Nothing but Trouble" launched his career in the beginning.  "Summertime" was certified platinum and was the highest to chart in the U.S.

I consider actors artists in their own right. I've always been a fan of Smith. When he was on Fresh Prince there were a few particularly dramatic episodes where he really impressed me. I had a feeling he was going to be like some of the great comedian-turned-Oscar nominees like Tom Hanks, Whoopie Goldberg, Robin Williams, Jim Carey, etc., and I think he's lived up to it.

I don't think this is as evident in his action films (and I'm not an action film fans), and I think he's a gifted comedy actor (even though movies like Men in Black and Bad Boys are not my taste, I think he was excellent in them) but I find his dramatic roles to include some outstanding performances, namely Bagger Vance, 6 Degrees of Separation, 7 Pounds, The Pursuit of Happyness. I wish he would take on more of these kinds of roles.

Mr. Smith is a quite adept in psychology and have great business savvy.  He parlayed an above rap career into a phenemonally successful acting career.  He is one of the most respected actors in Hollywood.  How many rappers can say THAT?    Mr. Smith is up there with the likes of Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and other A list actors.  Mr. Smith is surely WAY ON TOP of his game.
