   Am I the only one NOT watching the Oscars?
   
   Personally I do not view any type of awards ceremonies, I just do not see the point of them. Sure I enjoy music, movies, and books, but I feel that "celebrities" are just people who's occupation is as an "entertainer" and the money they make on entertaining the masses should be reward enough, without the need for awards ceremonies that cost a fortune. So again, am I the only one not watching the Oscars?

   Haven't watched them... I would say ever, but I believe I watched them once when staying with my Grandparents when very young.
   
   I can't understand wasting one's time watching very rich, self-centered individuals pat themselves and each other on the back.

      I have never watched them as an adult, I'm sure at some point in my youth I likely did with family. I agree completely nothing more than a bog boost for the huge egos of Hollywood!

   After "The Return of the King" I no longer watch Oscars. To me, that is the best film ever. Oscar becomes more and more boring each year.

      I do not watch it every year, but it does seem slower than when I have previously watch, so I thought, but maybe it is what you said...more boring each year.

   I agree with you. They are people who are simple doing their job. Is the award ceremony needed? No. But I have to admit it does depend on who is hosting.lol...For example, the ONLY reason I watched the last Golden Globes Awards was because Ricky Gervais was hosting. I will watch the Oscars tomorrow, but only because Chris Rock is hosting, and I also want to see what stars will join Jada Pinkett Smith and Spike Lee in boycotting the Academy Awards.
   
   I just wrote an article about it...lol
   
   However, you are right. And I do not usually tune in to award shows. I never watch music awards.

   My wife watches them, but I can't remember the last time that I actually watched. I also can't remember when I had a desire to watch them.
   
   They never pick my movies, or my people, so if I got an award at work, how many people would watch it?
   
   Instead of all of these awards, what we need are better movies, TV shows, and talent. I had to get Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, as well as broadcast TV to be able to watch something that I would like.
   
   It is months before I see a trailer for a movie I would actually spend money to see in a theater.
   Welcome to the club. yay.

   I haven't had cable in 3 years but we just got it back a couple weeks ago so I may watch part of it this year.  I'm a Leonardo DiCaprio fan so I might tune in just to see if he FINALLY wins one.
   
   In the past when I've watched it I've sort of just had it on in the background while doing something else.  I'm not super into it but it can be fun at times.

   I'm sure millions of people feel as you do and there are a lot more options and channels to watch on TV these days.
   Today the average person doesn't view "movie stars" as being extraordinary or magical. Quite a few of us believe we're just one viral YouTube video away from becoming stars ourselves! LOL!
   Although there are many folks who still idolize stars and make it a practice to keep up with what is going on in their personal lives as well as their careers the "aura of magic" is no longer there.
   Historically people were also heavily invested in rooting for their favorite movie or actor to win an award. Today we realize that studios campaign and run ads to get Academy members to vote for their movies or stars. They spend millions of dollars in advertising in industry trade newspapers such as Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety. Essentially it's a another political election!
   In fact the "For your consideration" ads start appearing in newspapers and trades to get actors and movies nominated!
   The best run campaign produces a winner over merit and there are always "sentimental favorites" awarded for their career efforts.
   If it wasn't for the entertainment factors including live performances of songs and jokes being told along with "red carpet" fashions, watching the Oscars would be equivalent to watching any other industry/company hand out their annual awards for "top sales rep" or whatever "merit award" that are often given out.
   People however don't live vicariously through the "average Joe".
