This page specializes in Hunger Games Halloween costumes. As you no doubt know, Katniss is the heroine of The Hunger Games trilogy of books and movies.. She is played in The Hunger Games movie by the lovely Jennifer Lawrence.

She is portrayed as a teenage girl with blue eyes and long brown hair. She dresses simply since she spends most of her time in the woods hunting for food for her family. Her family is quite poor, so she has a very humble look. This all changes when she goes to the Capitol to compete in The Hunger Games. Thanks to her stylist Cinna she makes a big impression.

Katniss Everdeen Costume

Katniss's hunting outfit is not described as well as later outfits in the book. In the movie, Katniss is wearing dark charcoal pants with a subtle stripe, black shirt, brown leather jacket, and brown leather lace up boots. Her hair is braided in a long braid that goes over the front of her shoulder. She also carries a brown leather bag and bow in some scenes.

Since this is her hunting outfit, the most important element here is probably the bow, followed by the boots and the jacket. Any pair of charcoal gray pants will work, although if you can find one with a subtle stripe, that is even better. Any black shirt will work. It looks like a thermal henley shirt in the film.

Since this is a hunting outfit, frayed, used clothing looks more authentic than brand new clothes. Also, the clothes would not fit perfectly. If you buy new clothing, I suggest overlooking those two details so you can reuse the clothing for something other than the costume.

One of the most important things I thought about the hunting pants is that they have a wider leg. So skinny type jeans are definitely out. If you already own a pair, you could do that, but these pants are pretty affordable. In the pictures the pants look like wool, or more like slacks, too.

Contestant Wig Adult

This is the perfect way to get Katniss hair for your Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen costume! The side braid is going to be very important to the overall look of the costume. Click the photo or link above to check them out on Amazon or make a purchase.

I am not going to pretend to be an expert on bows, but it looks like a wooden recurve bow in the movie photos to me. I found one that was similar, but it was almost $400. I found a much cheaper bow that might work. Check it out.

I think the bow would probably make it fine into a theater (but it would be bulky) or con, but don't expect arrows to make it in.

These three items, particularly the Trophy Ridge Mohican Hip Arrow Holster, have been very popular purchases when a bow is ordered. They add authenticity to the costume, but they are also great if you intend to learn or practice archery.

Knee High Lace Up (Brown) Adult Boots

These boots are the perfect compliment to a Katniss costume and they look great. They are tall and lace up just like the boots in the movie. The best part is that they are much more affordable than the boots shown above.

Katniss Everdeen Costume

These are the basics for the Katniss costume. You could add other items like a game bag and armguard, but I don't think they are necessary unless you are going for perfection. Keep in mind that if you are putting this together for a theater or con, actual arrows will not be allowed and the bow itself may be iffy. If that is the case then the game bag would be an item to substitute to add to the overall look.

Someone let me know that some cons allow rubber tipped arrows. Check with the place you are wearing the costume.

Hopefully, you have items already in your wardrobe (or your sister's or roommate's), that you can borrow for the costume. If you purchase items for the costume do it in mind of reusing the items in your wardrobe.

Katniss Everdeen Costume

This is close to what the movie shows as the costume for Katniss during the reaping. The shoes are what I feel is appropriate. I saw a still of Jennifer Lawrence wearing her reaping dress and black mule sneakers. I hope those are not the actual shoes!

The only flaw in this perfect outfit is that it is a bit too short. So cute, though! Still, the reaping costume should be a fairly simple Katniss Everdeen costume to do. It is very likely you can find the dress and shoes at a thrift store or in the back of a closet somewhere. Add in a braid down the back and you would be set.

Obviously, Katniss wasn't made up like a Capitol superstar yet, but you could use some powder or foundation if you feel uncomfortable without something. I think this would be a fun costume. It would set you apart from all the Katniss hunting costumes, Katniss arena costumes, etc.

Katniss, along with Peeta, wears skintight leather suits with knee high boots. Cinna adds some personal fiery touches, but I don't recommend replicating those.

Katniss Everdeen Costume

Click the thumbnail to see a larger version. I finally found a good photo I could use, a little small, but it shows the top part of her costume, her hair and make up.

Katniss appears to be wearing a black bodysuit with an elaborate collar. The bodysuit is very form fitting through her torso. Her hair is braided again, but it is done elaborately across the crown of her head. Her footwear in the books are knee length shiny boots, so I assume that is what they used in the movie.

You can see the gray detail on the jacket, the reddish orange on the inside, and that Katniss is wearing a v-neck black shirt. At least, I think it looks black. It was green in the books. I'll add more photos as I can find them.

These boots are very similar, but less expensive boots than the actual arena boots (no longer available). Madden Raszcal Boot. There is a range of sizes from 6-10. They come in brown as shown and also black.

Hunger Games Replica jackets are still available on eBay. Don't wait too much longer! If you really want one of these then now is the time to purchase.

Katniss Everdeen Costume

Add the boots and the Katniss hair wig from the hunting collection and you have a complete outfit. Fortunately, the basic pieces of clothing are all things you might already have in your closet or you can purchase at thrift stores. You might want to go with the authentic replica items, or you can make your own. With some creative use of black and orange duct tape you could dress up a black jacket, nylon sack, and backpack. I think of all the replica items I love the brooch the most. My husband ended up buying the brooch for me. I LOVE it!

You can also choose between dressing up as Katniss as she enters the arena. or dusting yourself up, rolling in the grass, adding some burns, etc and play Katniss after she has been in the arena a bit. If it were me, I would go with the fresh look. If you have worn clothes from a thrift store, then the battered Katniss look would be easiest.

Katniss Costume or Merida Costume

The popularity of The Hunger Games movie among kids has been huge. Many local stores, as well as internet retailers, and have trouble keeping bow and arrow for kids sets in stock. Coming this summer is another movie with a female heroine that wields a bow. If you haven't heard of the new Disney Pixar film, Brave, then check out my site on Brave the Movie.

Princess Merida is sure to be an extremely popular costume for young girls. I think it is likely that many young girls will want to be Katniss Everdeen too. At this point, I am not sure which costume the under 12 set will prefer. Tell me what you think in the poll below!

Of course, there are generic archer costumes available, as well as Robin Hood/Sherwood forest types for kids and adults. Those are always popular for males and females.

Both ladies are strong, courageous, bow wielding 16 year old heroines. The Hunger Games was a live action and violent film that is rated PG-13. Brave the movie, featuring Princess Merida, is not out until June 22, 2012, but it is rated PG. There are definitely tense and scary scenes in it, but since it is animated some of the edge is taken off that. As far as I know people are not repeatedly slaughtered in it ;)
