Congratulations on your new baby! Furnishing the nursery can be a time consuming and costly venture.

However, your new child needs some essential furniture to make your lives easier.

One such piece of furniture is a dresser, chest, or armoire that is used to store their baby clothes and other essential items.

I personally have used diaper changing tables that come with a few deep drawers and a cabinet for most of my children. Though not a full sized dresser, this type of furniture holds a small child's clothing for many years.

The changing table I currently have now can have the changing pad removed from the top when baby is done with diapers, and I can put decorative items or toys on the top.

The term “dresser” typically refers to pieces of furniture that are short and wide; approximately waist high. Bureaus are considered to stand much taller and have deeper drawers.

Armoires typically have a closet type feature at the top with a few drawers underneath. Inside the closet are shelving for you to store items as well. These are beautiful pieces of furniture but I always found that clothing was more easily disorganized in it at our house.

However, the shelves in an armoire are good for stacking diapers, bath products, and small baskets with other baby essentials in them. I suggest finding one that has both shelves and drawers on the inside of the closet space.

Are there any safety hazards?

I suggest finding a piece of furniture that is made with non toxic materials.

Also, if you buy a tall chest of drawers you will need to plan on getting safety latches for the drawers so your child cannot pull them out and climb up which in turn can cause the entire dresser to fall over on top of them.

Also, you are going to want to anchor it to the wall will keep it from tipping over.

What I need to consider when getting new baby furniture?

Make sure you measure the space in your baby's nursery so you know exactly what size dresser to get that will fit.

I also recommend buying drawer dividers, which will help separate baby’s smaller clothing.

My husband used to get frustrated when the onsies would mix up with pajamas and socks. Getting dividers really helped him see the differences in our infants clothing.

What should my nursery furniture be made of?

Dressers can be made from composite wood or wood timber. If you want to buy a dresser that will last a long time I suggest buying one is made with timber.

This could be bought as an heirloom piece so you can hand it down through the generations. Wood timber is typically more inexpensive but does not have as long of a lifespan.

I also suggest buying a dresser that is made of hardwood like cherry, maple, mahogany, walnut, or oak, as well as others instead of softwood, which includes pine, redwood, fir, and cypress.

Softwood dressers will dent much more easily therefore making your furniture look more used than you would probably prefer.

5 stars for DaVinci Porter 3 Drawer Changer Dresser

5 Great Piece of Furniture for Every Baby Nursery

This DaVinci Porter 3 Drawer Changer Dresser would make a good option for your child through the first handful of years. It comes with a 1” waterproof changing pad so you don’t need to buy one separately. I love that it is made of pine and features a non toxic finish.

Even when your baby is no longer small enough to use the top as a changer, it houses a place to store toys or decorations. The drawers are deep enough to easily store lots of clothing or blankets. The measurements on this are 36.9” x 23.1” x 40.6”.

I like this unique looking Legare 36 inch Dresser with its bright color accents on the top two shelves and around the drawers. There are a few different styles and colors to choose from as well.

This is made from wood composite though so be aware that it probably won’t be an heirloom piece. The best thing about this dresser was how fast it was to put together. It literally took less than a few minutes. It also comes with an optional mirror that can be mounted either horizontally or vertically. It measures 36" wide x 18" deep x 32" high.

I love the natural color of this Simmons Kids Furniture Melody Dresser. It also comes in black or white, if that matches your nursery better. The drawer slides keep the drawers from coming completely out.

It is also made with non toxic finishes and measures 53 inches by 22 inches by 15.3 inches. The drawers on this are quite deep but not as wide as many others; there are six drawers total.

This beautiful Westwood Design Stratton 6 Drawer Chest features two small drawers on the top and four full sized dressers underneath. I love how smooth the drawers move and quietly as well.

You can choose between metal or wooden pulls depending on your style preference. This is definitely a dresser that can last through the teen years. It measures 40” x 21” x 51.5”.

For those that want a waist high dresser, this Status Series 400 Combo Storage Unit might be just the thing. It features two shallow drawers at the top and four drawers underneath.

It is available in a few different finishes to fit your nursery as well. The drawer pulls are made with a nice brushed metal. There are two interior cabinet shelves for more storage as well.
