I believe for the safety of the child, the parent must be the one to initiate social activities. I can remember moving to Florida one son going into 6th grade and I had to leave him all alone in school, he made it to be very popular. My other son started his first year of high school.Actually with limited friends he studied more. They both did well. Good Luck
