How to for first time parents chosing a daycare...maybe a list of interview questions for the daycare provider?
Ask first, if you can pick them up at any time during the period of time that they are at the daycare.
That is a way of asking, if you can drop by at anytime without first calling. If they say no, then i would find out why, or seek out another daycare.
If they say yes, then consider that one, but in the mean time, ask to use the restroom. Take a look around while you are on the way, and even look in the rest room to see if it has been cleaned.
Ask if you can use the phone, then take a look around. You just never know what you may see.
I would also ask for parent references and then talk to those parents. Ask them:
1. How long have they used this daycare center?
2. How did they find out about this center?
3. Has there ever been anything that they questioned or were a little uncomfortable with?
4. Have they ever recommended this center to others?
5. Have the ever dropped in unannounced? If so, what was their impression?
Listen to their tone of voice. Are they guarded or enthusiastic? Do they volunteer information or just answer your questions..
