    Hiccups are caused by swallowing incorrectly.  In an adult it is easily cured by swallowing with one's mouth closed but babies haven't learned to do that.

    Their stomachs are suddenly at a different pressure than atmospheric pressure but the esophagus closes when trying to adjust causing the hiccup as the stomach tries to balance pressure.

    Hiccups in newborn babies are due to imperfect control of the diaphragm that is the sheet of muscle that separates the chest from the abdomen, and the hiccups will disappear as your baby's nervous system control of the diaphragm matures.
