A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of your diaphragm. That's why I actually have always found success in holding my breath to stop them. If that doesn't stop them, slow, deep, rhythmic breathing might help also.
Hiccups are caused by spasms in the diaphragm. Something gets it upset and it starts to spasm.
Well, everyone already said it. Involuntary spasm of the diaphragm. But I don't believe an actual "Cause" of the spasm has been found, but I could be wrong.
So all these years i thought it was because i swollowed my food to fast.
