    Ancestry.com will probably be the best single source, though you will have to pay to access the information.  Northern Irish records are quite sketchy, though, as most older records were destroyed in their Civil War.  They've gotten more information up in the past couple of years, though.  A lot of it depends on what years you're looking for.  They've just gotten up the 1901 and 1911 census, and that's free at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/.  The Ulster Covenant (also free online) could provide additional N. Irish documentation

    Hi

    The best website is probably www.ancestry.co.uk (or.com) which has lots of necessary information including the 1841-1901 census (1911 is available without indexes but will be indexed soon).  There are also the indexes to all the birth, marriage and death certificates from 1837 until 2004 as well as plenty of military records and parish registers from some parts of the country.

    Joining Ancestry isn't cheap but in the long run it will save you money as you won't need to travel to your local libarary or family history centre.

    Other than Ancestry there are quite a few independent online sources such as Freebmd, Freecen, familysearch.org and genuki which will provide you with plenty of places to start.
