What are the most important lessons to teach young children?

I think respecting elders and saying please and thank you are critical.  What are some other little lessons that are so important for us to pass onto young children today?

The most important lessons you can teach young children are ones that develop self-esteem and confidence. Everything else falls into place when these attributes are fostered. Oh yes, and of course, lessons in love are a must!

Because of the way the world is today, I say self-protection. But I agree with Sturgeonl, self esteem is really important.

The most important things to teach children is to have a high sense of self and the art of independence because if a child possess these two things, there is stopping him/her from succeeding in anything he/she undertakes in life.    Furthermore, if a child has a high sense of self, he/she would never be taken advantage by others.  It is also important to teach a child that he/she has power and never to give that power away to anyone!

Self respect and dignity, Unfortunately, you can learn these lessons only a hard way.

I think the number one thing we should all be aware of is to "treat others the way you would want to be treated". If we can try to look at things from the other person's point of view, the world would be a lot more harmonious and peaceful.

Respect on his/herself, on his/her parents and on other people. Self-discipline, right principles to believe in and how to stand whenever he /she is sure that he/she is right. To fed children with the right knowledge and a strong foundation on learning what is really right and wrong would help him to not be easily influenced by the sickness that the modern world brings.

The other most  important lessons to teach young children are to instill good human values in them- tell them that it is more important to give than to receive; encourage them to engage in extracurricular and sports activities to bring the best out of them and enhance their self-confidence; advise them to be good and friendly to their classmates, friends, cousins and other people and never be jealous of others and tell them that they are unique and special in their own way; advise them that never let success go to their minds and never let  failure go to their hearts and above all, tell them to live their life to the fullest in a balanced, peaceful, happy and positive way!

The most important lesson to teach young children is that it is ok to loose, that is how we learn from our mistakes . Which will then in turn teach them self esteem and confidence. To go on in life knowing that they can acheive what ever goal they set themselves. Also to love themselves and to love others.

There are two highly important things which must be cultivated in young children -

    1. That disciplined life is highly beneficial and respectful for everybody including the teacher and the children. This lesson is best taught through exemplification..

    2. That the world belongs to them as a place of happiness only if they keep in good health, else, it is as painful as any disease.
