When a boy reaches a certain age his larynx grows larger very quickly, and the vocal cords become longer and give out lower notes. During the "change-over" to his "man's voice" the boy is unable to adjust his vocal cords properly, and his voice is said to have "broken". A girl's larynx, on the other hand, grows much more slowly, and does not become as large as a man's, so there is only a slow and slight alteration in pitch.
