I think the number one thing any parent can do is help their child develop a good self-esteem. Especially with the time and place we’re living in, people can be very vulnerable to a world that can knock them down. Obviously, quality family time and teaching and giving respect are particularly important but should naturally come along with promoting a good self-esteem. No, you can’t win every time and the whole “everybody’s a winner” is unrealistic. There are winners and losers, but you need to teach your kids to be grateful for a victory and how to lose with pride. If we just simply sugarcoat everything and try to make everything fair then we are actually being unfair to our kids because they won’t be able to handle the realities of the real world. So… teach your children to believe they are good enough and embrace who they are while recognizing there is always room for improvement.
An excellent choice!!! Many of the problems we face as individuals in this society stem from issues with self esteem. Whether that's bullying, depression, insecurity or simply someone who appears to be an underachiever. Often times they lack the confidence to do better because they do not have a strong enough sense of independence which comes from a positive self esteem!
Thank you. This has become a tough place and time to live. My biggest worry is if my kids will be strong enough to stand through it without getting knocked over.
I'd say you are off to a good start. Concern turns to contemplation which turns into action when properly thought out. I'm just looking to gain the information and advice before I have children of my own, so I can raise them in the best way possible!
Aw thanks and so beautifully stated! I don't want to scare you off with "the world is such a horrible place" stuff. If you have enough of a heart and concern to put thought into how you will raise your child... you will be a good parent.
