Homemade Eggnog

Home Made Eggnog and Eggnog Drinks

Eggnog is a well established holiday tradition,it first became popular during colonial times.Eggnog is basically a combination of milk, eggs, and liquor(historically rum,but whiskey and brandy are also used).

Dairy eggnog's,which do not contain any alcohol, can be found in the refrigerated dairy case at many larger groceries.Eggnog's are most often served in quantity, although there are also some variations for single servings.

My Husband loves eggnog. The problem I have found is that although Eggnog can be found in the local super market-he does not always like it,so it goes to waste. So I started making this from scratch-and there is never any that's goes to waste. When making your own eggnog you will

be using raw eggs, which may carry the risk of salmonella poisoning. So Be Careful.I am including a homemade recipe,in case you want to try it and you can add your preference of alcohol.I used Sailor Jerry's Rum--and it was awesome. This recipe makes 19 cups or thirty-eight 1/2 cup servings. You will need to begin 2 hours ahead of early in the day. It tastes better chilled or with ice.

EGGNOG

12 Eggs,separated

1 cup sugar

1 1/2 cups bourbon

1/2 cup brandy

6 cups milk

ground nutmeg

1 cup heavy or whipping cream

1. In large bowl with mixer at low speed, beat egg yolks with sugar.

At high speed, beat until thick and lemon-colored,about 15 minutes, frequently scraping the bowl.

2. Carefully beat in bourbon and brandy, one tablespoon at a time to prevent curdling mixture. Cover and chill.

3. About 20 minutes before serving: in chilled 5 to 6 quart punch bowl, stir yolk mixture, milk and 1 1/4 teaspoons nutmeg.

4.In large bowl with mixer at high speed, beat egg whites until soft peaks form.

5. In small bowl ,using same beaters, with mixer at medium speed, beat cream until stiff peaks form.

6. With wire whisk, gently fold egg whites and cream into yolk mixture until just blended.

7.To serve, sprinkle some nutmeg over top of eggnog; ladle into 6-ounce punch cups.
