What I do is place my rice in the pot first stir it around without water for about 2 or 3 minutes then pour just enough water in to cover the rice cook on medium for about 5 minutes stirring to keep from sticking when water is gone pour a little bit to keep the bottom of the pot wet check the rice to see if tender. If not the repeat the process. I know this seems like a lot to do for rice but it is a sure way to keep it from becoming mushy and it will give you a better idea on just how much water to really use. Also if you remove the hot rice from the pot and place in another dish that is cool then this will help stop the cooking process that can also cause your rice to have the mushy taste. Good Luck.
