How many pounds of turkey should I buy for 12 people?

We are big eaters and we like leftovers, but aren't quite sure of how big of a turkey to buy for Thanksgiving dinner.

The rule of thumb is 1/4--1/2 pound per person, but don't you want leftovers? Also, good luck finding a 6 pound turkey.

14-16 pound bird, as unlikely as it may seem. When you adjust for loss due to cooking and the carcass (I love that word) the net loss is close to 35%. Depending on the appetites assembled and a rough portion size of 6 to 8 ozs. per person, this would yield 18-20 portions, maybe a bit more. Plenty for leftovers and some to send home with friends and family.

Wow we had 7 people at Thanksgiving. Most of us are slim yet we needed 2 turkeys (12 pounds each) .
Of course there was enough left for sandwiches

Better to have too much then too little.

Whenever I feed 12 or more people I buy a 25 pound bird or else buy 2 turkeys at 15 - 18 pounds each and that way there should be leftovers.
