Why can't we hand pick bananas?

I don't get it - we can hand pick tomatoes at the store. Some have the vines and all attached but why can't I hand pick a couple of different bananas? I want one really ripe to eat that night, one less ripe and so on.

What is the deal with packaging bananas? Can I separate them and I just didn't know?

It depends which store you go to. In some, they are left out loose and you can pick whichever you want. In others, well, if I don't see the kind of bananas I like, then I ask the assistant if they have any others. We eat a lot of bananas in our house, so I tend to get some that are green and some that are just yellow.

If they are packaged and I don't like what I see, then I ask the assistant to separate them for me. You are paying - you should get what you want!
