What does a persimmon taste like and what are some good recipes to use them in?
I have always seen persimmons in the store but have never tasted nor cooked with them. However I am very curious about them and would like to give them a try. Does anyone have any tasty recipes or other suggestions on how to serve them?
Persimmons are my favorite fruit and a welcome winter treat. Any you find in summer in the States probably hail from the Southern Hemisphere.
They have a high sugar content and are incredibly sweet when ripe, but they're totally inedible when not! Indeed they can be so astringent when not ripe that you feel like you've got a mouthful of hair. But don't let that dissuade you, they are worth waiting for. Some varieties are soft when ripe and others stay firm, some get black spots when ripe and others don't. The best is to ask your grocer how to choose until you get the hang of it.
As for recipes, they make a great pumpkin-like pie. I'll try to dig up the one I have and post it, though photos would have to wait for winter!
Hi! Great question...you may have missed my hub on this very topic. With a yummy recipe!

For me it is Strawberry Jam on toast made with the perfectly round milk roll! We had it in my nans and went through a loaf a night between me and my 2 brothers!
