Has anyone here ever put chocolate in a chilli con carné?
I've been told it's lovely, but I've never tried it! I'm cooking chilli at the weekend for a group of friends and I was wondering whether to risk it or not! Feel free to give me recipes, I know you're all fantastic cooks! :-)
Yes. It's absolutely worth trying, especially if you're a fan of mole sauce. Do not use sweet chocolate. Use unsweetened, and a little goes a long way. It pairs nicely with chipotle chilis. It adds depth to the flavor and compliments the smokiness of the peppers. I usually use chipotles canned in adobo sauce in my chili.
I use cocoa in chili. It gives the chili a more complex flavor. I agree with Annabelle Tyler about using chipotles for a nice smoky complement to the cocoa or chocolate. I wrote a hub about it a while back and give instructions for making your own chili powder using chipotles and other dried chiles. It adds so much to your chili...you just can't get the same flavor with most commercial chili seasonings.
