Can you eat a pumpkin after you paint it or do the paint chemicals pass through the skin?
Whether the paint chemicals penetrated the outter layer or not, I would not eat a pumpkin that had been painted and used for decoration for the simple reason that it had to have been decaying while it sat out as a decoration.
Decaying why? I was under the impression that an intact, uncut pumpkin could last for weeks without decaying.
Most people hollow out a pumpkin before they make a Jack 'O' Lantern.
No my plan was just to paint on it without carving it out.
All vegetables rot when they have been cut from the vine or taken off the stock. If they are kept at a steady refrigerated temperature they may last a bit longer but the normal is for warmer days and colder nights which would decrease it's life.
I wouldn't even consider eating a pumpkin that has sat around through Halloween. Forget about the paint, I would worry about food poisoning from the decaying pumpkin. If you want to eat some of it, carve out some of the meat before you paint it.
Please LISTEN to everyone above. You could harm yourself and your family if you eat the meat from a pumpkin that's been sitting around unrefrigerated for, say, five days. Don't forget the insects that have tromped thru it! Not a good idea at all

What is your favorite treat to eat at Halloween, not counting candy?Do you or your family have a traditional meal, dessert or snack that you eat at Halloween? If so, what is it and why do you like it?

In our household, we adopted the pumpkin painting because we have little ones that have no business being around a knife. So I got the idea to let them paint their pumpkins, and mommy and daddy would carve. What would you choose? And yes, you can answer both if you like them both : )
