Can someone answer this question for me?  In the series LOST were they dead the whole time on the Island or just the end of the show?  This did not make sense to me because not all of the characters died in the end?  Some got off the Island in the plane?  Wan to know what your opinion is.

    From Lost on Lost

They were just dead in the sideways universe.   It was something they created for themselves, sort of like a 'waiting room', so that when they all died eventually they could meet and move on together.

Everything that happened on the island was real.  Jack died there, as well as many of the others.

Its safe to assume that Kate and Sawyer and the ones on the plane lived much longer.

      Points to prove this:

Kate says to Jack in sideways universe:  "I missed you so much."  This shows that she must of lived much longer after she left Jack on the island.

Hurley says to Ben:  "you were a great number two."  They lived on the island together afterwards for who knows how long.

And even Jacks dad tells him:  "Everything that happened was real... some died long before you and some long after.  This place is a place you guys made for each other, because it was the most important part of your lives."

Hope this helps.  Also there a thread a bit lower on the page explaining more, as well as many hubs lying around with a good explanation.

Hey thank-you for explination, it clears most of it up, but why was Ben waiting outside of the room?  did he not die?  Was he the one left to guard the light on the Island?  Still a little lost.

he wasn't ready to 'move on' with the other.  He was dead, that's for sure, but i think he was still waiting to make amends with Alex, his daughter.

interesting, but she was not in that room and was she supposed to be dead too?

This is why I think they were all dead the whole time.  Because in an episode from a long time ago the lady on the plane told Jack to "move on" when he was trying to get back to the island.

But she was in the same 'alternate' world that they created.  Alex hadn't remembered yet, and I think it was Ben's job to help her come to terms with her death.   I think it was implied that all the characters we saw in that world were dead.

The same goes Daniel and Eloise... Eloise wasn't ready to let Daniel move on yet, and would rather live in the 'waiting' room with him.  She probably didn't want him to remember that she was the one that killed him.

Exactly, we were watching from the alternate world.

Have to agree with vanchen.  My husband and I have been avid watchers and that is how we seen the last episode.  IT was an excellent program.  I hope more producers see the potential in  producing other series like that.

Okay, so what you are saying is that the events on the island were REAL events. They really crashed there, experienced all that stuff, then some escaped, then they came back together. Right?

So when we witnessed each person die, whether on the island or not, they really died at the time it showed them dying. Right?

Then each person who REALLY died, went into the 'alternate state' or pergatory or whatever you call it, to wait for the others when they actually DID die. Right?

So we never got to actually witness the deaths of Kate, Sawyer, the Pilot, Claire......they died waaaaay later on after they got back to civilization, but Jack died right after they left on the island, Hurley died at an unknown time later on the island, and Ben did, too......Right?

So once the last of them actually really died, that's when they all met in their alternate pergatory world where all was so perfect...like at the concert....Right?

I know I sound like a broken record here, but I'm trying to get a good understanding on what actually happened.

Right on all accounts.  I actually thought it was the perfect ending for a show that really was all about the characters.

That explains why Jack had a son (which ne never did, but really wanted).  Also explains Sawyer being a cop..he probably always wanted to be one in life but never did. And Ben, a teacher...and a nice guy!  Then Locke, married to that wonderful woman that busted up with him in real life...what he really wanted. Their ideal lives....except for Kate being in jail.
Well, that tells me enough. I understand pretty well now.....thanks.

Yea they had their own little ways to come to terms with their lives.  And in the end it was the time they spent together on the Island that was the most important.

Ok one last point that still makes me think that they died and were living in an alternative state on this island.  When they first crashed on the news it reported that they all had died in the begining. the plain was at the bottom of the ocean with them all dead.  How does that fit in?

I don't know, I'm just as LOST as you, but I also agree with your alternate state theory.

It was explained in one of the early seasons.  Widmore planted a fake plane there to fool the rest of the world.  He wanted the island to himself, so he sure didn't want the whole world vying to get there as well.

Ok so explain where this Witmore character fits into to this whole theory?

Well he died on the island when Ben shot him.  The show needed a big powerful character who had lots of money... in season 6 the main purpose of him was to bring Desmond to the island, who we saw was vital for the end of the show.

He wasn't nearly important enough to any of the characters (except maybe Penny) to be included in 'waiting' room with the others.  It's safe to assume that he moved on at another time with the people that were 'important' in his life.

We have all of it on dvd here and at halfway through we can't be bothered to watch any more whatever the ending, even though we often run out of movies when we could do with one.  Without the weekly waiting suspense it has very little going for it.

The creators did not answer every single question on purpose (like, the meaning of the numbers) so people would continue to watch and rewatch the show for years to come.  It's fun to discuss theories, but don't expect to solve every mystery or you'll drive yourself KRAZY!
