If the killer Van Der Sloot was an unattractive black man that killed two unattractive black women, would he still get the same amount of media coverage? Why?
Perhaps you could make your point better by shedding light on some murdered black women who still need justice, rather than a blond dude who is locked up.
Both white and black women still need justice along with many other people, but many aren't appealing or attractive enough for the media to cover.
First off, I haven't a clue who that is and there is a reason for that. I do not watch TV. Simple explanation.
Killers all get too much play time in TV-Land. There is a reason for it- evil, sadistic killers puts fear into the viewer, even if it's locked up. The more people hear about another killer getting locked up, sure they feel a little bit better, however, they also have a sinking feeling that they are not so sure about some of their neighbors.
It is purposely portrayed to instill fear and in the hopes that the viewer will reward the company who brought forth the news about it, with loyal viewership.
It's all about business- business doesn't play race favorites, they use everyone the same.
You touched on a good point about ratings from fear. I think the media gets a high when a killer looks like they could be a suburb next door neighbor because this is what many people least expect, people and media profile for the killer to look like a killer rather than like an everyday person.
What a sick and twisted and deliberately inciteful question, IMO only, reminds me of CNN's overt, and overt yet again (that's how overt!), coverage of the serial killer, Wayne Williams, this past week.
I'm thinking of writing a hub on that crap. They built it up for quite a while as a racist rabble rousing BS case -- ultimately, the dude was so guilty, and pegged so by other black American people -- CNN just had to make it about race from the get go -- the ultimate political ulterior motive these days for liberal broadcasts. Most catch the 'catch-line' and don't finish such a lengthy show, so their political job is done.
The truth is sick and twisted, so it takes a sick and twisted question to find the truth, but I don't think my question is sick and twisted. Wayne Williams was in 1981 and this is the first I am hearing of him. I think there is a lot of racism in media, do you think ugly people get as much air time as attractive people? Do peaceful people get as much air time as controversial people?
As I recall OJ got much more publicity than the little creep Vander Sloot. And he killed only one woman.
OJ is in the NFL hall of fame, plus it helped build the publicity when the country saw the police chase down the highway. But it is a decent point, the most important news is the news of who the media can make a celebrity.
This is one reason America will always have a racial divide. Because we can not look at people as individuals but must always involve the race card.
I would like to think that it doesn't matter that the women were attractive. This guy is a serial killer, I imagine he would get as much attention no matter what color he or his victims were.
I think it would be nice if thats how things worked, but thats not reality in my perception of media coverage. thank you
Yes it would, but the sad reality is that why is it an issue, people are people...color has nothing to do with it, in my opinion. We have black colleges and no white colleges...why is that? Is it an issue, not for me but the media makes it crazy for us to move forward and live as one race, that is how we should be, one race and not separated by color.
I think the black colleges is an excellent issue, but not part of the topic. It's like we tried to cure segregation with more segregation. I don't agree with all black colleges the same I wouldn't agree with all white colleges, but then again, we have all male colleges and all female colleges as well, what about this one? If we do some male or female only colleges, why not do gay and straight colleges as well?
Maybe the question should just have been. Do murders of pretty young women get more media coverage than those of others?
That would have been too easy to answer.
If "ifs" and "buts" were candy and nuts every day would be Christmas.
If Oranges were Yellow would we still call them Oranges?
The point of this post is what again?

Why has there been such a lack of media coverage in this murder trial? This doctor murdered babies after they had been born by making an incision in the back of the neck and cutting the spinal cord between the 1st and 2nd vertebrae. He also liked to save the fetuses' feet for unknown reasons. But...

Why is the media coverage of economy consistently negative? After 9/11, the stock market plummeted. However, a less known reality is that 59 days later, on 11/9, the stock market had returned to its pre-9/11 status. Why was that not heralded? Why is the media consistently negative...

Was the Trayvon Martin media coverage a distraction? The tragic events that led to a teenagers death is sad and the 20 year sentence that Marissa Alexander received seems to have a overt racial overtone to it but are/is our focus diverted from other news in the sunshine state as well? After a week of traveling, trying to get snatches of news when possible, this rankles me: there is no news coverage in this country. The media gets on a subject and beats it to death, excluding everything else. In a week of traveling every airport TV has blared inch by inch detail...
