    CIVIL: (connotation) courteous, polite.
Relevant to the dictionary definition, specifically the mentioned connotation, how can one refer to mankind as being "civilized?"   Hmmm?

there are certainly times and places when you have to wonder.
for the most part, in my everyday world, I see civilized people. but yes, there does seem to be more primitively insipient humans populating the globe. part of it comes from apathy, simply not caring for anything other than their own lives.

you have to wonder about the people who so rudely weave in and out of traffic, yakking on their phone, texting while they're driving, in such a hurry to get home and argue with their partners or yell at their kids. there seems to be an upsurge in unconscious living.

You should treat yourself to a trip to China and I will take you out onmy electric scooter - you can watch EVERYONE weaving in and out, on their phone, scooters with parents and three kids flying around, odd people in the middle of busy junctions obliviously on their phone and traffic weaving around them - and everyone pretty safe, safer I think than on any western road.  Everyone gets home about the same time it takes in any traffic light strictly regulated system.  BUT everyone is happy and polite enough, and what keeps everyone alive is a basic humanity that cares about each other to the point where hurting someone else is unthinkeable almost; reinforced by the law that says if you damage anyone or anything you pay for it big_smile

The whole experience is amazingly stress-free and funny as hell coming from the tightly regulated driving in the UK.

Back to the thread - civility fades away in the face of commodity.  In a commodity system (capitalist) you and everything about your life is for sale in some form or another. This puts a value on anything - so being civil to you costs me something, and when times are hard we don't like to give anything away.

I live in a Communist system that is organically merging with some aspects of the western generally Capitalist system - The possibility that some new better hybrid will come from the merger is much higher than the chances of Capitalist systems evolving into anything better.  Socialism can be seen as just a counter to the worst aspects of Capitalism and so must always partner Capital.

As an observer - I find the current rise of China interesting and I have some optimism that it may lead to some new way of doing things.

            g'marnin' to ya Alternate.
I've often wanted to visit China. Almost 1 1/2 billion people in a country just a bit larger that the USA in statute mileage, is a deterent. The language is too.
The Chinese people here in the states are very courteous and civil.
Capitalistic communism is unique and it has worked well in China.
Eventually, because of a burgeoning world population problem, there will, necessarily, have to be a "single" world gov't that will have to control the "remaining" masses much like China does i.e. an iron fist.
We presently exist at a mid point in contemporary human potential.
As human population continues to increase and within another generation reaches just under 10 billion, "stresses" that will be experienced will make todays problems shrink in size and import.
Universal ignorance and desperation will fragment humanity to a degree that there will be only one method of "cure." That method will be, without a doubt, a diminution in human population.
How that will be acquired is speculative.
Given our current genetic programming, and understanding the limits of human suffering and of the human psyche, the resulting "reduction" will not be pleasant.
Man, as he currently exists, is not "genetically" able to become a socially "civilized" creature. He is Earths prime predator able to think, imagine, invent, plan and invent and realize the future.
The logical and reasonable (the more highly evolved) exist in the minority.
Primitive thinkers, those whose rely on greed, gods, demons and superstition for guidance will be increased like a geometric progression. They will decide our fate because they will be the majority.
Man is most definitely incipiently primitive and most definitely WILL jeopardize all life on this planet.
The earth will heal itself and life will once again abound, but man will not be the "creature" we are familiar with today.
            Have a great day.    :-)

well, you've given a great visual image for us to imagine.  some day I think it would be amazing to travel the great Silk Road through parts of China.

I think also in answer to the post, our own thoughts also affect how we see the world. there are some who are so angry, I think some of what they see is their own projection, it's not real.  we can see that here in these forums.

I thought I'd get more response than this.
The subject matter is so interesting to me and is of such great import to the viability of mankind.
