Need advice for building a website.

   A friend and I are wanting to make a themed website containing humorous and useful information. We'd like to be able to post videos and links etc.. Does anyone recommend a package (Intuit, SBI, etc) that is easy to use and IF we get decent traffic can link to AdSense or sell advertising space or something? Any help appreciated!

      If your site is content oriented, use wordpress. It is amazing. Otherwise do your research and use any good package like Joomla, Ruby or anything suits you.

         Ruby ? Nope.
         
         Only programmers will be able to understand how to work with it on hostgator or other hosting sites. It's not easy to use ruby if any beginner wants to install simple CMS, forums etc. Ruby as  framework is easy to manage, code but on user side it is very difficult to manage. Users have to figure out where is SSH in their cpanel and how to use it before they can deploy any ROR app.

   I really think wordpress is the all in one package for anyone who is just starting and for experts too.
   
   It can become anything you need it to and it can be learned in minutes.

   I build websites for businesses and hand over the reins - so far I only use wordpress and the support on my end has been minimal!

   I vote for wordpress, too.  It's a (free) piece of software, not a fancy "website in a box" package - but even those packages have a learning curve, and learning to use Wordpress is about the same.  Plus it costs nothing, and there's a host of support on the web.
   
   I had my first Wordpress site up and running in less than a day, in a basic format, and I'd never used anything like it before.

   Absolutely Wordpress.  You can start with wordpress.com and move to your own site when and if you are ready.

      Yes, you can use Wordpress.com to learn the ropes of the software - but two points to note.
      
      1.  You're not allowed to put any advertising on a Wordpress.com site, so when you're ready to start monetizing, you'll need to upgrade to using the Wordpress.org software and hosting.
      
      2.  So I'd recommend you buy your own domain name and use it with Wordpress.com from the very start - that way you don't confuse your readership with a change of name when you upgrade.

   So, you're saying Wordpress is the way to go? HA HA Ok, will definitly check it out. We do want to start with our own domain Marisa. Just in case it becomes worth our time to monetize, which is the plan. Thanks everyone!

   What host do you recommend? One that would possibly allow several videos etc and works well with Wordpress?

      I would recommend HostGator.  You can read my Hub to find out why if you want.  Easy Wordpress install and tons of other applications.   
      
      As for videos, you should upload to YouTube as much as possible or use Camtasia if you only want it to show on your website.  YouTube videos do not use your website resources, so almost any website host will do.

      I'm with Hostgator because it was recommended by several Hubbers - it's cheap but not the fastest.
      
      For videos, the best way is to load them on Youtube or Revver, then use a Wordpress plugin to embed them in your blog (the same way HubPages embeds videos).  I believe if you upload them on Revver, you can earn income from them too.

   I will recommend SBI. I have been using SBI for the last 3 years and I am very happy about it. I wish I had taken it up earlier. It is an all inclusive package. It is not free. But you can try for one month, and if you are not happy you can ask for the refund. They have monthly payment and annual payment facilities.

      If you're happy with it, it's only because you haven't investigated other options.  SBI is a very expensive way to run a website and if you ever leave the program, I believe you lose your site.

   If you have a budget it would be wise to contact a custom web design firm such as us or a local firm that can help you with consulting.  People have great ideas every day but actually channeling those into success can prove more difficult then ever for someone who doesn't know the web as well as industry professionals.
