Depends what you're looking for. A small, medium, or big dog? Greyhounds are amazing dogs for children, but on the bigger side. Smaller dogs tend to be yappier, but loving, such as any in the Bichon family. Bichon Frise are amazingly sweet. Also, would you be getting a puppy, or a dog at least a year or two old?
Golden Retrievers are great with children! You have to do some research on what is best for your entire family! Because the children are probably not going to be the ones tending to the dog's needs--such as bathing, feeding etc...
Labs or Goldens -- without a doubt. Your kids can climb on them, ride them, do all sorts of crazy stuff and those sweet guys will just grin and bear it.
Labs and Heelers.
All of my brothers have children. Two have Labs, and one has a Blue Heeler.
There has never a problem with the children and dogs in ten years.
We had an Australian Shepherd when are children were growing up. I've had Shetland Sheepdogs,German Shepherds and have trained several different breeds of dogs over the years and our Tillie was amazing with the kids. There are miniature Aussies if the 'regular size' is too big but they are a nice medium size dogs with amazing dispositions and they love children. If I had a growing family I'd get another in a heartbeat.
It is always best when buying any purebred dog that you get one from a reputable breeder - there are a lot of the other kind out there.
Great Dane! Definitely a Great Dane! If you could see our two big boys with our tiny grandchildren, you'd run out and buy one tomorrow!
I know we're not supposed to plug our own hubs here, but read my hub about Great Danes and kids. One of my Dane hubs has a pic of my tiny grandson using one of the dogs as a comfy seat.
I've owned and trained a lot of breeds, but the GD is the all-around best for families, based on my own personal experience. This isn't self-serving. I don't breed or sell Danes. Both my dogs are neutered males.
The one that is not going to kill your child if it gets mad. Too many sad examples unfortunately, way too many.
Just remember that any dog has a wolf in its genes. I would not trust any dog around my children (when they were small of course). Many years ago when my first child was a baby. I, a grown up woman just by a very lucky chance was NOT KILLED by my mom's dog. I was very-very lucky, because this german shepherd dog of my mom was really after my throat.
I have a family that has wanted a dog for years, but was allergic to them. After months of hunting, I came across a Lhasa that fit perfect and didn't raise the roof with an allergy attack. I wanted to breed him before getting him fixed. (I had alot of friends and neighbors that loved him and wanted an offspring.) Unfortunatly I couldn't find another purebred in my area. So, I searched again and came across a Bichon Frise/Lhasa Mix and fell in love with how the offspring looked. (Also good with families with allergies.) To make a long story short...Our La-Chon has been perfect with kids and everyone that recieved a pup from the litter loves them. If you want more info on them, I posted a few hubs and will answer any questions.
Definitely labs are the best or goldens because of their gentle nature.
Our Danes are very protective of the grandkids. They seem to think it's their duty to keep them safe. My daughter tried to give my granddaughter a pop on the butt one day, and Hamlet took my daughter's arm gently in his mouth and led her away from my granddaughter.
