do what some of the ignorant folks in Nashville do. line up at "toys are us" 8 hrs in advance, and if its sold out, then just wrestle out of the hands of a 7 year old walking in the store...you'll be famous, make the news and everything!....sick crap if you ask me!

If you don't mind paying more for it, craigslist and ebay are two great places to find crazy popular toys/items. People go out and purposely buy the product to sell knowing they will make money. I've bought many hard to find items this way and it was well worth it. Saved a lot of time and aggravation.

Your best bet is to buy early if at all possible.  Otherwise try eBay.

How do you find what the hottest toy of the year is?

The best thing to do is stop being hypnotised by the commercial behemoths that want to control every aspect of our lives by convincing us that to not buy the latest gadget, toy, car, for xmas will render us all as outcasts.

    Or try ebay

Plan ahead of time. Many stores offer before Christmas sales (yes, even before Black Friday) because these massive rushes also put a strain on the store's resources. Look online and even decide if the "hottest new toy" is something your child would actually enjoy or if they have just been duped again by modern advertising.

Get to a local box store early in the morning and push my cart up and down the aisle while the employees put the new stock out. Tuesday and Wednesday have generally been my luckiest days to get the most sought after toy.

It's kind of funny how toy manufacturers create a hot toy every year than after the batteries of the toy run out nobody seems to care. This year there are so many toys. If you are familiar with the Christmas season price scalpers buy the hot toys up and make them hard to find. If you wait too long you will have to pay a premimum for the hot toy. People were selling zhu zhu pets for 500% markup last year. Buy early.

I call the manufacturer, buy the minimum wholesale quantity and donate the excess to charity.

I love all of the posts here and all of the great ideas. It’s not real hard to see the trends. All you have to do is spend a little time (a couple months before Christmas) looking at items on eBay. If they are all selling, and they are sold out in most stores, it’s a good indication that they will remain trendy. If you begin too early, the market can easily fall out. Now is the PERFECT time of year to gage the hot toys. What's hot right now? That's easy! Have you seen the Lalaloospy Dolls? Toys R Us are all sold out but you can still get them at stores like Wal-Mart, but no later than 10am each day. Then there are Sing-a-ma-jigs that were doing well about a week ago and are still holding on to a close third place. But I'm sure you are all wondering what is in first place. Well that would be of course the Fushigi Gravity Ball. I just found two at sears, of all places. The only problem with this toy is that you have to work for a circus in order to make this thing work, but for some reason this isn't stopping people from buying these things by the thousands. Just take a look at the completed section of eBay this item. You will do back flips! http://www.MySingamajigs.com

depends on the age group. but I know what one of them is for the preschool set. same as it is for adults, but made for children.

you can also check out amazon best selling toys, they're generally hot items.

The hottest toy to get is what your kid likes(by taking note of their favorite cartoons or character they like to talk about). If you buy him or her something they don't like , they will toss it aside within minutes. You dont want that after all the trouble.
I agree with the ebay idea, during this high demand and low supply some ambitious people resort to 'blackmarket'.
