Hello all... I hope that this topic reaches some folks who know what the heck is going on when it relates to Biochemistry for the medical sciences. I am starting Physician Assistant Med school through the University of Nebraska Medical Center on January 3, 2011 and I am concerned about my Biochemistry. I have only taken General Chemistry classes (6 hours)and they were online and I feel as though I didn't really learn too much and just skated by. If anyone has any knowledge of Biochemistry, Microbiology, or both, I would greatly appreciate any help that I may need. Any of that help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Biochemistry in med school was the easiest (although not easy) chemistry class I ever took. It had very little in common with general chemistry. It's much more memorization than conceptualization. The challenge lies in the volume of the information, not the difficulty.  Same with Micro. Don't sweat it ahead of time. Just keep up with the work as they assign it. Write out the processes and charts until you can do it in your sleep.

Oh and by the way, Physician Assistant school is a GREAT choice. I wish I'd have thought of that.

My daughter is finding biochemistry to be a lot of work, lots of lab time, but she is getting a great grade.  She does really well in chemistry, but she was also a Biomedical engineering student before changing her major to pre-med.  Find a good study group smile

I am a biologist with knowledge in both biochemistry and microbes. Biochem was one of my favorite topics. I tutor through tutor.com

Thanks for the encouraging words. Every Physician I have talked to and all of the PAs I have talked to have said the same thing. I look forward to it and am happy with my choice, especially since the Army is paying for it as well as my salary so that I can attend and support my young family.

Oh... And if not for you physicians, we couldn't have PAs.

Good luck to you! I don't know you but I'm happy for you. Twelve years after graduating from med school, I still have over $150K in loans- YIKES!

Keep in touch and let me know if I can be of assistance in any way. I don't remember much about the course material, but studying, I'm an expert smile

Good luck! Biochem wasn't too bad for me, but I really hated O-chem.

Good luck with the rest of your class! I graduated with a biochemistry/molecular biology degree, but never continued on with my education. PA school is a wonderful choice!
