Voting down a hub?

   I started hub hopping today for the first time, and it has me wondering about the "vote down" feature. When should this be used? I've come across a few hubs with very poor grammar/sentence structure. I know my own grammar skills could use some work but some of these hubs were so poorly written that they they were obviously created by people who are not native English speakers. I almost voted down one of them because the writing was so difficult to understand, but then I figured that if someone is working hard to learn and write a foreign language, who am I to vote down their hub just because it has some mistakes.
   
   Anyway, it just got me thinking about the option to vote down hubs. When is it appropriate to use?

      I rarely do it, preferring to Vote Up when I really like something.  If something is so poor that I'd be tempted to vote it down, it usually needs to be flagged anyway.
      
      That said, there are rare hubs that fall in between bad and not bad enough to flag and I do vote them down.

      For this reason I stop hub hopping, I am always tempted to vote down or spam and I feel really bad after doing it. I will leave this job for other people to do!

      This is the purpose of hub hopping to give these writers a thumbs up or thumbs down depending on the quality of their hubs. If they see their hub score going down that is an indication that they need to revise their hub to attract readers and more traffic. It does not do any good if you are not honest about your opinion on other hubs. So if it a good hub I would definitely give the hubber a thumbs up for their hub. But if I see a lot of grammatical errors in a hub or if there is spamming in the hub I will give it a thumbs down.

   I never vote hubs down, if it's bad I ignore it and move on, if it's offensive or in clear breach of decency I report it.
   
   I prefer to find a reason to vote up but when I go hub hopping I am very tempted.

   Thanks for the responses. I guess voting down doesn't seem right when the writer is trying to create a good hub, even if he/she doesn't succeed!

   I just finished reading a hub which has a number of grammatical errors, starting with the first word. The writer seems to be English, but the work looks like a failure to proofread and use spellcheck or someone in a hurry to publish. I think some simply don't know, so I'm not sure if we vote those kind of hubs down. At some point, if there are too many hubs being published with so many errors, it reflects on HP. The content was informational and helpful, but I'm not sure if some viewers would continue reading.

   Flag substandard hubs.  (Not thumbs down).  It's not a matter of being polite or rude, it's about the professionalism of the site.  We owe it to ourselves and HubPages to flag hubs that are substandard or any of the other reasons given by them for flagging a hub.  Flag it and let HubPages decide if it needs to be marked for revision.  How else will they learn what is acceptable? If everyone just ignores it, they will assume it's ok and continue doing what they're doing.

      so when do you vote down a hub? I realize HP wants it to be used, but there seems to be a fine line deciding when.. I would not consider the hub I read substandard even with the errors. I would say a good percentage of the writers here are not professional writers. After reading the profile, I would not vote down the hub. People are here for different reasons.

      I agree with KCC Big Country. I want to support the integrity of the Hub Pages, so I try to HubHop several times a week but seldom if ever do I vote down a Hub. I do flag Hubs for being substandard. Sometimes I think people hit the publish button before they're ready and produce an empty Hub.
      
      When in doubt, flag.
