Has anyone read the Lord of the rings series? it is a beautiful series written by J.R.R Tolkien and is my favorite trilogy. after reading the series and watching the films i must say, Peter Jackson left a lot of stuff out!
Can you imagine how long the movie series would have been if it had included everything. The language of film is very different than the language of print. The metaphors are different. I cannot imagine how to film the long historical passages or lengthy family histories or poems in the books and keep a movie moving and interesting.
I read the books before the films came out. The films are only soaringly good due to the amount of painstaking detail Tolkien put into his trilogy. However, it is nice to watch it all compacted. I did feel sad when I finished the books though - I felt like I'd been on an epic adventure, but now I had to get on with my life.
Yup, several times. Some of the story was dropped because it wouldn't have added anything other than more time sat in a seat watching the film. I don't think what was cut detracted, it made the trilogy more direct.
My thoughts anyway
I've read the lord of the rings to death to try and take in all of the in depth explanations of hobbits eating and the landscapes of middle earth, but I do like the movies better as it leaves out all of the fluff(or at least most of it from the books!)
I find that the books and the movies are two separate entities that create two very different worlds in your own imagination!
I love the books, but I started them at least 4 times before finally getting into them. I'm glad I did because I couldn't put it down about halfway through the first one. The movies manage to be one of the very few that come close to being as good as the books.
I love the movies as well but i thought it was wierd that they left out Tom Bombadil considering he (according to the books) is the oldest living thing in middle earth and in my opinion may be a metaphor for life or jesus, im not entirely sure.
Wow. Interesting. Seriously. Now I'm curious about the books.
I've always just loved the Lord of the Rings for its entertainment value and it's fight between good and evil forces in a general way; never took it seriously though.
yeah you should check out the books! and tell me what you think!
I am a LOTR fanatic.yeah, I have read the books and watched the movies, too. One of my favorite fiction series, Tolkien is a genius.
i agree completely. greatest fantasy writer, i cant think of anyone to top his work.
Oh I can..J.K. Rowling I think is also one of the best..She is also my favorite. Like the LOTR, I have read and watched every Harry Potter book and movie.
i havn't read the books but saw the movies and i dont know, the movies just didn't get to me like lotr i guess.
Never made me many fans, yet after 27 years I still struggle to read Tolkien and am half way through the 2nd LOTR book.
Horror genre is the same, find it really, really difficult to read Stephen King, yet I can devour Dean Koontz easily.
Different for all.
Loved Peter Jacksons versions of LOTR on film though.
i read alotta Stephen king. it was hard to pick up on his lingo at first but i started to get it after a book or two. as for lotr i understood it good and looked up everything i didnt get online. smart reading i guess haha.
Dean Koontz is a very good writer. He sharpened his teeth on real literature before writing horror fiction. His language is plain and straight forward - I like that.
so very true!
I think the LOTR trilogy and The Hobbit should be on everyone's bucket list if you haven't read it yet. I used to sit in my bedroom for hours reading these books. They do take you to another world. The movies are among my top favorite movies. A real treat is to watch the unedited versions with all the interviews and background of how the movies were made.

This thought was triggered by a friend of mine, an English major who plans to write a book that will surpass J.R.R. Tolkien's eternal classic, Lord of the Rings. As you may have heard, LOTR (among others) is considered to be the definition of modern fantasy, introducing many of today's common...
