   Holy man if high school and university students can come up with these figures then what to heck is wrong with the auto industry when they can't do better than 50 or 60 mpg?  Or for that matter 10 to 15 mpg for decades?

   But the photo that you posted above ngureco is not a 2 pound toy.  There is someone in that vehicle.  Here's a couple of other photos of the cars.
   
   
   
   
   
   What I'm getting at is if high school and university students can get those figures then the auto industry should be able to do much better than they are doing.

   The problem is that fuel efficiency, performance and safety are incompatible aims. If people were happy with low performance cars, the fuel efficiency could be greatly increased. Similarly, good road-holding and cornering requires tyre types that absorb energy. These efficiency machines run on three knife edge rims. Comfort is also a factor - suspension wastes fuel, but would you be without it?
   
   Having said that, we should be moving towards lower performance vehicles without compromising safety. The current production cars are (mostly) skewed far too far towards performance.
   
   Another consideration is that efficient cars can be safe in themselves, but not mixed in with 5.5 litre Land Cruisers and Hummers.

         Yeah good points Paraglider.  But isn't the difference between the two something to consider?  You know, from 50 to 60 mpg to 2,843 mpg is quite a wide gap.  You would think the auto industry would be able to narrow that gap more than they have.

            It is getting a little better with the new VW golf returning very good figures. The horsepower can be reduced a long way. Example. I have a one tonne ute that is only 2.4 litres. It will break the speed limit with a full load, so why would I need five litres? 5 litres is a common size engine for a ute of one ton. Crazy!

   Let the fuel-efficient cars come to India immediately. If our fuel bill is reduced, we need not rely on oil-rich Arab countries and keep mum on all their misdeeds.
   If India can pull on with nuclear power, coal, hydro-power, and petroleum available in India, politically we can be a proud country. Most of India's external policies are based on oil.
