    a new strain of the "superbug" MRSA in milk from cows and in swab samples from humans.

    Why do we allow the farming practices that cause so many of these types of danger, allows so much long-term harmful stuff in the food chain, deseased cucumbers, lethal pigs, dodgy food oils, etc etc when it is all in the interests of the big food chains ONLY ?

    When are our so-called governments going to stop serving ONLY the interests of the rich food chain barons and look after the interests of the people who are stupid enough to elect them to look after OUR interests ?

    When is anybody going to stand up and object to governments unnecesary control of every aspect of our lives from smoking to how we walk and where we walk and start taking control of those who graze on us ?

      I think of lot of farming practices have to do with supply and demand. We, the consumers, demand affordable prices in the shops, and plentiful supplies.
      Instead of breeding more cows for milking - as each cow pushes costs up - farmers over-milk existing cows resulting in mastitis which then has to be treated with antibiotics, which in turn get in the food chain causing MRSA and antibiotic resistance in the population.

      Same with the oils. To keep production costs down,giant bakery concerns or fast-food outlets use the cheapest and longest lasting oils they can find - even though they are bad for us.

      If we are prepared to pay higher costs, we can get safer foods. Just look at the price difference between normal veggies and organic veggies.

      But you are right, it's not just pricing because these companies all seem to have massive profits that they could easily reduce to make their produce safer while not raising prices.

        The other side of this are the laws that stop anyone growing or rearing foodstuff and selling it that are based on supposed hygeine and food safety, but are really just controlling the market for the food corporation barons.  And the same people own the government.

          They run the world, along with the oil companies.

          Everyone needs food, and it's scary to see how farms are being operated. The farmers aren't in control. The soil is depleted of nutrients. Have you watched Food, Inc and Fast Food Nation? It's estimated that 70% of antibiotics in the US are given to [healthy] animals in order to increase their size. On one of my hubs about food additives, I have a few helpful links. The public can comment on proposed regulations and submit petitions. One could go to their own government sites and find information. Unless the public make their voice heard and stop buying certain brands of food, nothing will ever change. There is so much sickness and disease which keeps big Pharma and the insurance companies making huge profits. It's all an endless merry-go-round that robs citizens of their health and in many instances, their lives.

            Yes they do - never mind what to do with the existing products - people grow some of their own food and sell the extra without interference and harassment from a horde of government officials working ultimately ONLY for big business.  And we elect the slimy bast@rds who keep all this in place - are we stupid or what !

    For the most part, citizens are uninformed or are led to believe the food they eat is healthy because it's regulated and approved. That isn't the case, especially with imports.

      But this is the whole point, the regulations etc are for the processed foods that are sold in supermarkets, when applied to local produce they effectively prevent the normal healthier foods from being sold.  The myth of imported food quality is just to protect the trade of Kraft and Nestle and the other conglomerates who are simply keeping out the competition.  These corporations run massive farms, pay low wages and destroy the countrysides in which they operate and the micro-economy of hte local region.

        The FDA inspects a little over 0.5% of imports, and much of it is banned because of regulations and use of banned chemicals and antibiotics. So what happens to the rest that is not inspected? We consume it. The WTO makes sure of that with their 'free trade' laws rather than 'fair trade'.

        Seafood is one of the worst regulated imported foods and much of US seafood, especially shrimp [90%] is imported. It's best to consume domestic, locally grown food wherever you live. Ask where the food comes from!

        all in the name of profit, that's it.
