Murdoch in Deep Dodo over phone hacking -not before time!

   The News of the World (NoW) is Britain's largest selling newspaper.
   
   Every Sunday NoW publishes details of which celebrities are being naughty with people that they are not married to, and in some cases people become celebrities themselves because they have had naughty relationships with enough sportsmen to be able to field their own team -with reserves!
   
   Clergy who are too close to a parishioner are a regular staple.
   
   Major crime stories are of course hugely interesting, and NoW often carries more revealing stories than the other tabloids.
   
   It turns out that NoW hired a private detective to hack into voicemail messages on telephones, incuding the telephones of murder victims, their mothers, the families of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, Royalty, sports people, celebritiies, politicians, and even their lawyers. This has been going on for at least 9 years.
   
   Murdoch owns the NoW and is now saying he does not support these activities, did not know they were going on, and is appalled. The fact that two of his journalists went to prison 4 years ago for this, and NoW is set to pay out over £1,000,000 in damages did not disturb Murdoch particularly.Companies are withdrawing advertising from NoW, so his concern is now triggered.

   The post to which pscheskinner links is an extremely good read. Although it starts with the News of the World and Murdoch it deals heavily with sex crime and priests and Ireland.
   
   I want to discuss Murdoch and phonetapping.

      Just yesterday, Murdoch was defending the paper and the editor and called the allegations "disgusting". Now he's shutting it down. I'm guessing when he delved deeper into what actually happened he found the allegations were true, and the only way to save face and prevent the advertiser boycotts from spreading into other parts of his empire was to shut down the newspaper.

   The News of the World has just announced that next Sunday will be the last edition printed. The advertisers have left in droves and the scandal just seems to be getting deeper a deeper

   There are even allegations of reporters bribing corrupt police and the story that seems to have most choked the nation is that of poor Milly Dowler's phone being hacked after she went missing, and some of the her messages being erased, which led her parents to believe that she might still be alive.

      I think that this one is going to rumble on for years, and that we will all be horrified about exactly how deep the telephone hacking went. They reckon that News International is already up for a £120 million compensation bill.
      
      You just have to wonder whether any of our other British newspapers are at it, and quite why they feel they have to inflict a Sunday edition of the 'Sun' on us

   They knew what they were doing. Each and everyone that's involved is now performing the usual damage limitation that goes hand in hand with this type of event.
   
   I wish they'd stop wasting print/breath/time protesting their innocence.

   One powerful message behind this is the handing over of power from Murdoch and his cronies in Government and the Police, to a new army of social networkers.
   
   I really believe that this year has seen a turning point in people power.
   
   Don't like something?  Blog about it.  If 100,000 people join in - things can happen.
   
   That's why the advertisers pulled out, and that is why the paper closed.  The lowly blogger, who doesn't have a journalism job or a political post to cling onto - can speak the truth for the people.
   
   Sorry, if I sound a bit up myself.  I have barely started.

    Mr Murdoch said Mrs Brooks' leadership right now was "crucial".
    
    "I am satisfied that Rebekah [and] her leadership of this business and her standard of ethics and her standard of conduct throughout her career are very good."
    
    Notice that James Murdoch said 'very good'. That's an awful long way from saying ' ... her standard of ethics and her standard of conduct thoughout her career have always been excellent'
