What era fascinates you in US history?

   You know how some people tend to get excited over 50's theme restaurants or anything relating to that era, yet some of these people weren't even born yet!  Have you ever met the type?  Well, I just finished writing my hub on "take me home tonight", and it got me thinking about this.  You see, I have somewhat of a confession to make.  Something that I didn't tell anyone until I wrote my hub on the film, and I'm telling you kind people at hubpages about it.  For years, I've been secretly fascinated with the 80's era of the United states. I don't know why exactly, nor have i ever cared enough to find out why exactly.  Maybe it's because I was born in 1980, and a part of me feels a strong affinity to that era for that exact reason...or it could be something more.  Do I have any fond memories from that era?  Not exactly, unless you want to count cartoons like "thundercats", "He-man", "teenage mutant ninja turtles", "care bears" (don't laugh, as I was a child during that era damn it!), and "transformers."  Therefore, what could it be though?  I really don't know why I have a fascination with that era, but I just do.
   
   anyways, I apologize for trailing off here. the purpose of this thread is for you to admit what era in usa history fascinates you the most, and try to explain why.  however, if you're like me, and you don't have a reasonable explanation, then you don't need to worry about it then; just name the era with no explanation necessary.  anyways, who else wants to name an era that they're fascinated by?  Anyone?

   1980's as well for me also because I was coming of age. For me, however, it was the Iran/Contra hearings, Chernobyl, Wall Street corruption, Lee Iacocca, Falkland Wars and the infancy of cabletv. 1st to 10th grade. The impressions were very strong and it was the now historical events through which I was living.

         Right? During Iran/Contra I said, "Mom, is this gonna be in the history books when I'm older?"
         And she was like, "Yep, sure is." Hooked on the news ever since.

   I go through phases of fascination w/ different eras. Many times it's pre-Euro-Christian invasion, ahem, settlement.
   I do love to read novels set in the sixties and before. There seems to be reflected in the (mainstream) art of those times an innocence and naivety. Sort of a blissful ignorance, in a sense. Sometimes, I feel like crawling into a 1950's sitcom for a while -- but again, I become cynical and go back to being interested in pre-colonization events. (Though, obviously they are not well-documented.)
   PS I was born in 1980 as well. I never thought I would see some of those fashions come back. Or the power ballads.

   I'd say the 80's too, a lot of movies that are fondly remembered as a kid came out then, Ghostbusters, the Goonies, Howard the Duck, Labrynth and many others and as a kid also growing up in the 80's a lot of music from that era just seems to have stuck with me.
   
   Also around 20 plus years ago, things just seemed different and much better....would love to know if the Moon landings were fake or real in the 60's I suppose no one will ever really know except those involved!

   I am interested in the pre-European Americas, because the culture was unique to that part of the world, and had an ancient history.  It is such a shame that the native people lost their culture and often their lives. 
   
   As far as more recent history is concerned, I like the image portrayed in American TV of the '50s.  The "High honey, I'm home" era, where children called the milkman sir, and everyone ate a pile of waffles for breakfast with no concern for their heart.  Whilst I doubt this was a reflection of real life, it seemed to have a cosy image which in the modern world can sometimes seem so attractive.  Unfortunately, as someone who considers himself a liberal, I doubt that in reality I could cope with the conservatism of the age.
