it;s from the Latin "dies solis" meaning Sun's day..the name of a pagan Roman holiday
So does this mean that every Sunday should be a roman holiday?
It already is. Most Christian sects have declared that the first day is the seventh day - a day of rest and worship. With Papal authority and push behind it it is certainly Roman.
It certainly seems...convenient...that it is also the pagan holiday. Much like Christmas, Easter, etc.
The days of the week was name before the Romans. The Romans only gave their version of the days of the week. Who was the first ones?
Several days of the week were named for Norse/Anglo-Saxon gods: Tiw's day (tuesday), Woden's day (wednesday), Thor's day (thursday), and Freya's day (friday). These names probably surfaced around the third or fourth century, largely replacing the Greco-Roman names. I think the Indians, however, were the first to give names to the days of the week.
I think the naming of the first days of the week came during the days of the flood.Millions of years pass during that time of human existence.I think the cave men had the first ideas in the naming of the days.
