I have been reading several hubs where the author has taken the time to document sources and provide relevant links to scholarly research.
The articles are very well researched and well written.
I think one thing that could reinforce in the minds of Hubbers and in the minds of the readers the fact that "HubPages is not a blog" would be by awarding a "badge" to that specific hub and creating a new section for articles which are deemed worthy of scholarly research.
I feel it is important to showcase the added efforts of those authors.
What are your thoughts.
Thanks, Gma. Great idea. The research is such an important part of journalism/writing, whether fact or fiction. It would be nice to edify the work of these people who go the extra mile to inform us and give us the added benefit of using the references they cite.
there is a 'top of the class' selection. I think they should make an accolade for those that have been awarded this
Helium has "badges" for experts. For example, I had to send them a copy of my teaching certificate to get my educator's badge.
At my college were only allowed to use verified databases for research papers. Everything in the database is fact checked.
Eesksh!! Shades of Demand Media Studios!
I've written for that particular site, and they are so "anal" about which sources you can and cannot use, with prohibited sites on their "blacklist" far outnumbering allowed sources, that trying to find acceptable (and mandatory) references to cite is so time-consuming as to make the pay rate for the article just not worth the time.
They happily allow .gov sources, e.g., completely forgetting or ignoring that our "illustrious government" does such a fine job of mis-direction, cover-up and outright lying as to make .gov sites actually some of the least reliable information available!
I do hope Hub Pages does not fall into that type of requirement!!!
I think it's a good idea. To write a hub with factual information has to be properly researched. I find many hubs being written on personal experiences only. Take for instance health hubs should be properly researched with sources mentioned.
One more thing. When I was the Coordinator for a company I worked with, I could not use Wikipedia as my research source based on the fact that anyone can edit and input information there. I personally have had to edit information about my country a few times. I found out that the person who added the information about a particular town in Jamaica has never even been to Jamaica.
The point is, I see people listing their source as Wikipedia. This is not an acceptable source as there are lots of misleading information there.
If I am doing an article on food health I go to the USDA or another Government site on the topic. For Cancer - the Cancer foundation
heart - Heart Foundation.
sounds fine if voluntary.. I've made a few hubs about personal experience w/ a disclaimer added but I shouldn't be forced to cite everything. Yet if a person wants to add more credibility to a Hub i think it would be a great idea to bring attention to those Hubbers who choose to do so for the scholarly sake of their article. Letting their hub shine through on scholarly merit seems like an added effect that could only make Hubpages even better... I beleive, the collaboration concept on google's Knol site they have some scholarly articles based on merits of users but i'm not sure how popular it is as I haven't gone there in a while.Adding badges based on what Habee said would be an added bonus without affecting other Hubber's abilty to compete for exposure.or nill.
***Scratch that*** - knol is now being transferred to Annotum on Word Press!
