Do you have a spark? What about fasting brings enlightenment?
Fasting can make you feel alot of unusual things. Your body is deprived of nutrients...
*can* is different from *does* -and we are not getting there even with a lot of junk.
My point was that fasting can AND will make you feel a lot of things, if you do it long enough. Your body is being deprived of nutrients. Your body will start breaking down and your mind will do funny things. It's the same as if you deprive your body of sleep.
Yea. But I was speaking about the controlled-fasting. Even fasting with dried fruits and fruit-juices; just to try a different approach. Discussing philosophy does not do *real* change - does it?
Food does. Stop watching television for a week. Stay in a forest for a day and night. Run a mile in a field. They work much better than listening to any philosophy.
I see. As for controlled fasting, I have no clue. Never tried it and I'm not familiar with the ideas surrounding that type of fasting.
Fasting shapes the mind. It gives it focus. It's difficult in our world to do it, just as it's difficult to stay away from television or newspaper, they are now a part of life. Do we walk nowadays? We used to walk when there were no public transport. Try walking for a day. It brings a different mind.
How exactly would fasting give it focus? I'm not sure I'm getting your drift....is it because it require discipline and commitment, or..?
There is a direct connection between the stomach and the nervous system. When there is no food, the mind gets into action. Fat people seldom think.
The mind seeks all sorts of sensation, depriving the mind of want releases us from wanting things we don't need. Quiet the mind by not feeding into it, all of the time.
I don't watch tv. I don't even read newspaper. They are very distracting to me. And I read a book only after I am certain that the writer was *mentally* sane.
I'm just as crazy as the next guy, but at least I'm willing to admit it. I criticiise myself daily and I'm more sane for doing so. It keeps things in a realistic perspective.
It were better if we could damn the world for a day!
And why not? It's all realy only an opinion anyway. My perspective will always differ, but if I can silence my mind for a minute, I can at least act as a gentleman, at least when I'm around or talking to other people.
"Fat people seldom think." -- That's a rather narrow-minded statement. I know plenty of overweight people who are quite mentally adept.
Yes there is obviously a direct connection between the stomach and the nervous system. When there is no food, yes the mind does get into action. I was asking about whether or not the mind would have focus, not whether or not the mind would be affected.
It gets focused. The mind, in want of food, becomes desperate. It becomes *thin*, and whatever subject you want to drive it to, it can get there. I am not generalizing here, as many people will not get much enjoyment in fasting. But often it works.
I would suggest to try a different food habit first. Stop meat and egg, if possible, even fish. Mind will surely get into a new direction. No religion or philosophy needed.
I'm guessing this was more of a sarcastic suggestion then?
You may change a car for a cycle. After cycle, you may prefer walking. For beginners, I think a cycle is better than the burden to carry themselves!
Well you're not really answering the questions directly so it's kind of difficult to have a conversation....
Nevermind then.
Don't give food to your system, and it will try to fill the void by internal mechanism, one of which is original thinking, and having clear vision. Most people can not bear the initial pain, as most people can not climb a mountain. We all have special abilities, physical or otherwise.
Was that simple?
I don't know about that. That's one take on it, I suppose. Each to their own.
Yes, happily, because we find no objective truth in there, just as like in religion and philosophy. They provide alternatives. One subjectivity to cover another.
Well if you don't want to discuss, nevermind. But you're not really being very clear in your statements. That's why I keep asking for clarification. I'm feeling like we're not talking about the same thing.
It's like peeling an onion. There are many layers of the subject. I enjoyed the talk. You are clever. Do you believe in palmistry? -I can make you meet one who can exactly tell your past and future. Does science accept palmistry? Is palmistry a subject we read in school?
Nope, it's superstition. Many things work, but evidence are not there. You can call me insane for believing in palmistry. You are not wrong. It's they way you see things. Life is very strange.
Some people may spend a year to understand life. They perish and their knowledge vanishes with them. Another civilization may continue for centuries trying to figure that out, while the knowledge was before and under their noses. Life comes in circles.
Fasting can bring delirium, if that's what you mean by clearing the mind.
