    Buddha said:

“Free your mind of ignorance and be anxious to learn the truth, especially in the one thing that is needful, lest you fall a prey either , to scepticism or to errors. Scepticism will make you indifferent and errors will lead you astray, so that you shall not find the noble path that leads to life eternal."

    Chapter-46: Verse-13
    http://reluctant-messenger.com/gospel_b … ter_46.htm

Paarsurrey says: The atheists/skeptics many a time present Buddha as an atheist/agnostic/skeptic; I don’t think he belonged to them.

My point is that the teachings of Buddha and his style as we see in this short chapter are not that of the atheists/agnostics/skeptics; they never tell such things publicly and or are never worried to eradicate such evils from the society or to purify it. So, Buddha does not belong to them.

Buddha didn't believe in any god therefore he was an atheist.

Did he say that he did not believe in the Creator God? Please quote his words from a Sutta.

Why not look them up yourself?  Buddhism does not have a deity.

Using an atheist icon to debunk atheism=priceless.

Buddha is not an icon of atheism. He did not deny in the Creator God.

He is an icon and an atheist.  Because he (as recorded in various texts) did not believe in a deity, finding enlightenment through a deity, or any recorded religion.

"Do not accept what you hear by report, do not accept tradition, do not accept a statement because it is found in your books, nor because it is in accord with your belief, nor because it is the saying of your teacher. Be lamps unto yourselves. Those who, either now or after I am dead, shall rely upon themselves only and not look for assistance to anyone besides themselves, it is they who shall reach the topmost height."

          "paarsurrey wrote:

Christopher Hitchens in his book "God is not great" says in Chapter Fourteen
"There Is No “Eastern Solution", meaning thereby that there is no solution in Buddha's religion; hence it is evident that atheists/agnostics/skeptics don't believe that he was an agnostic/atheist or skeptic.

Buddha had a religion, rather he was a founder of a religion, while agnostic/atheist and skeptic pronounce they have no religion.

          Am I right?

Funny how you are incapable of understanding that those are two different ideas that are completely unrelated.

I'm agnostic. Buddha wouldn't approve of me?  This is supposed to matter to me? Why?

I am not talking of the perosn "Emile R" whom Buddha does not approve. I am talking of the concept of atheism/agnosticism/skepticism; Buddha does not approve those who belong to these concepts and does not belong to them; he does not own them.

Buddha talks of purity of self and the self-at-large the society; is there any concept of self-purity or purity of the society as did Buddha want?

      I don't think so.

      Buddha says:

      "The Gospel of Buddha

      Avoiding the Ten Evils

      The Buddha said:
"All acts of living creatures become bad by ten things,
and by avoiding the ten things they become good.
There are three evils of the body,
      four evils of the tongue,
and three evils of the mind. [1]
      "The evils of the body are, murder, theft, and adultery;
      of the tongue, lying, slander, abuse, and idle talk;
of the mind, covetousness, hatred, and error. [2]

"I exhort you to avoid the ten evils: [3]

"(1) Kill not, but have regard for life. [4]

"(2) Steal not, neither do ye rob; but help everybody to be master of the fruits of his labour. [5]

"(3) Abstain from impurity, and lead a life of chastity. [6]

"(4) Lie not, but be truthful. Speak the truth with discretion, fearlessly and in a loving heart. [7]

"(5) Invent not evil reports, neither do ye repeat them.
Carp not, but look for the good sides of your fellowbeings,
so that ye may with sincerity defend them against their enemies. [8]

"(6) Swear not, but speak decently and with dignity. [9]

"(7) Waste not the time with gossip, but speak to the purpose or keep silence. [10]

"(8) Covet not, nor envy, but rejoice at the fortunes of other people. [11]

"(9) Clease your heart of malice and cherish no hatred,
      not even against your enemies;
but embrace all living beings with kindness. [12]

"(10) Free your mind of ignorance
and be anxious to learn the truth,
especially in the one thing that is needful,
lest you fall a prey either to scepticism or to errors.
      Scepticism will make you indifferent
and errors will lead you astray,
so that you shall not find the noble path
that leads to life eternal." [13]"

If Agnostics think of Buddha as one of their icons; and Buddha does not approve of them; I think it should matter to them. Wont it?

I read through your whole post and I don't see anywhere that it points out a problem with being agnostic. Do you understand what the word agnostic means?

@emile buddha was revolutionary in his times...when people or so called prophets where more concerned about concept called god , buddha said that is non important thing to do...He was non committal as far as god goes ....he was more concerned about human nature , its suffering and how it was be eradicated...he never promoted seeking interference of some unproven entity to solve humans problem...Einstein rightly said that Buddhism is only religion which would be compatible with science in future...since it has to do with human nature , human thought....

I was always under the impression that Buddha made it clear that Buddhism had no set belief on there being a God or not... Buddhism is more of a philosophy than anything. Therefore, someone can be both a Buddhist and an agnostic/atheist/theist? At least that's what I was taught in my Religion courses, and I seem to get just by with it.

Buddha didnt feel that humanity was at a level to have an awareness of God, so why define such a concept.
Atleast that was what I was taught in Catholic school.
