Both ways, Gray and Grey. Why?

It annoys me that there are two accepted ways to spell it. There should be only one. The English language drives me nuts sometimes.

      It's "gray" in American English.

It's "grey" in all other English.

      Those pesky Americans...

I've always preferred "grey." Somehow, it seems to have more connotation.

      I like that.

A gray wall, but a grey sky?

Greyhound racing is fun to watch, but gray cats not so much?

      Gray equals gray.

      Grey equals pewter?

    What if we decided that

gray equalled the color of something tangible (wall, car, pants, eyes)

    and

grey equalled the mood or feeling of something intangible (her emotions, his state of mind, atmosphere of the room, flavor of the election)?

Could we make that an honourable blend of the two?  smile
