   Gina Rinehart, Australian billionaire, stated that if people worked harder and socialized less, they would also be rich!    Ms. Rinehart is of the school that the poor of wealthier countries are the way they are because they WANT to be, no more no less.   Ms. Rinehart stated that anyone can become rich if they wished to do so, no excuses.

         Duh, isn't it self-explanatory?   No one in his/her right mind wants to struggle socioeconomically-to constantly worrying about next paycheck, putting food on the table, and roof over one's head.   No one wants live paycheck to paycheck, worrying about being paychecks away from homelessness!

            There's a lot of room in between struggling and being rich. Why do you want to use up resources that could be put to better use? like good schools and infrastructure? Are you that selfish?

               Rich people aren't selfish. Rich people are successful, and have the right to do what they choose with their earnings. They don't take resources from schools, because schools are paid for by taxes. Actually, since rich people pay a higher percentage towards taxes, I would say that they actually add to schools.

                  I agree that they usually are selfish. Why does anyone need six homes or ten cars? Why do they need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on clothes and jewelry, when they know that others are suffering around the planet.
                  
                  Too many rich people are rich because they're dysfunctional otherwise. Their goal is money, and so is their total focus. For those particular rich people, I find this sad. Especially when they have the bought the idea that being rich should make you happier. A lot of studies have shown that, after you've met your basic needs, money doesn't add significantly to your happiness.  Other studies have shown that helping other people adds a great deal to the happiness of even people who have been selfish all of their lives.

                     Because it's their money, and they don't want to hand it out for free. And they would rather have their assets sitting on things like property and gold than as a number on a computer in a bank account. They are investing in themselves, and also helping the economy by purchasing from others.

                  Kathleen, no use to convince!   You and I are in agreement regarding this premise.   Leave it at that!    There seems to be an antiachievement and antiwealth mentality which is indeed shameful to say the least!    People seem to glamorize struggle and living from hand to mouth!

                     You know, when the majority of people aren't rich, it says something about the minority. If the minority provided more for the community from their wealth, what it said would be good and healthy. And some wealthy people do.
                     
                     However, too many don't. I know a millionaire who hasn't paid a penny in taxes in years, and who never gives a cent to charity. She's extremely miserly, and very neurotic. Her only skill is making money, and it doesn't make her one cent happier.
                     
                     I've known a lot of people who've either come from wealthy families or who have made their wealth themselves, and it's not because they work harder than the rest of us. Too many times, it's because they inherited it, and are, in reality, more lazy and self-indulgent than anyone who's committing welfare fraud.
                     
                     Those who do work hard, but sacrifice everything, including their families, while they spend their lives making a lot of money are the saddest of all.
                     
                     As for your lumping people who don't agree with you into an "antiachievement and antiwealth" category, now that's shameful! It would probably be better if you announced when you post that you can't take disagreement.
                     
                     Not all of us struggle. We live comfortably. And we manage to share our modest wealth with those around us. That's the decent thing to do. I'd say that the wealthy could take some serious lessons from the middle class about community.

      This kind of generalization is a bit arrogant - insulting the wage earner who works hard and trying to make both ends meet.
      
      if I could make factors relevant why one is rich, I will surely include econ. system, political system, family (include status of, inheritance), education and the individual capability. Sometimes a combination of luck and opportunity will make one rich.

   There is a lot of territory in between 'struggling' and 'rich'. 
   
   And a little struggling is probably good for us.... people in subsistence culture have a lot of problems, but depression usually isn't one of them.

      I agree! There's far more things to make us happy outside of money. Then again money keeps us healthy, a roof over our head, food in our mouths, and clothes on our back so I guess money is kind of the root of life.

         Yes, money is an extremely important component in life.   To those who portend that one can be happy outside of money, tell THAT to an impoverished or homeless person!  Peebles, there are people who need to wake up and face socioeconomic reality!
