Are their too many beginners activity hubs on hubpages?

The net is awash with 'how to start....' doing something articles

How do hubbers get on with the next level of articles after that- for the established do-ers?

For cycling i've found the basics are already covered in great depth already and everybody seems to want to write a how to lose weight hub. What about in your areas? Should we be targeting the established doers not the beginners?

I think that is a pretty astute observation. The problem is that beginners probably already have a knowledge base that they turn to regularly.  Just using a topic I know, an experienced poker player isn't going to search online for the best way to make a squeeze play late in a tournament. They're probably going to get that info from one of the books they own or from a specialized forum.

I think you can get the more experienced crowd by moving out of how-to's. "Fun" lIsts, product reviews, anecdotes, and other topics are probably going to get the enthusiast crowd you're looking at.

You've answered your own question.  Think about what you wanted to know at the various stages of your cycling career.  Then do a Google search and see what comes up.  If you can't find adequate information, write a Hub about it.  If there are hundreds of articles on it already, don't bother.

Personally, I'd say if you know a lot about cycling, start your own blog or website on the subject and cover the entire subject of cycling fitness in depth.  I'm sure someone else is doing that already, but  it doesn't mean you can't do it better.

I like this thread here, its a cool one indeed, and it has inspired me to write about it, thanks.
I believe that online writers have the option to choose anything they would like to write about, and so its truly up to them if they are to write 100 or 1000+ how to articles, and even if there's potentially millions of other similarly written articles out here online.

Each author will surely have their very own expertise to offer, and some may just be winging it all, the fact of the matter is that since its the web, pretty much anything goes, and if viewers choose to leave a page because it is of poor quality, or appears to be somewhat identical to the next, well then that's just how the web functions, and has been doing so for years on end now.

This is my humble and honest opinion, take it or leave it, it is what I have experienced first hand as an expert web surfer rather than that of a expert writer. Thanks again for starting up such a forum, cool stuff!
